This week, we celebrate the Adoption and Alternative Child Care Week, an annual observance every June that raises awareness on the importance of legal adoption and alternative child care.

With ‘Love Makes A Family’ as the theme for , we reaffirm on our belief that a family is not defined by their biological connection, but the love and hope shared with one another. Every child deserves to feel loved, supported, and cared for, no matter how one family is formed. 💖 For several years, Consuelo has partnered with the government, different organizations, communities, and child welfare advocates, in promoting family-based care and healing notably in Kaagapay sa Kalinga at Aruga: Gabay sa Pagpapatupad ng RA 11222 (2020) and Arugâ: An Alternative Child Care Conference (2023).❤️‍🩹

As the National Authority for Child Care (NACC) stated last April that there are over 8000 children in institutional care, with more than 1000 legally available for adoption, we encourage everyone to open their hearts and homes by supporting such options as administrative adoption, foster care, residential care, and other safe alternatives for children who are in need. Because every child deserves their own 'ohana or pamilya, and a loving home . 🌹

This was one of the key reflections shared by Dr. Yella Castillo, Managing Director of Consuelo Foundation, during the 2nd day of the 9th Philippine National Children's Conference (PNCC), highlighting learnings from the Consuelo Youth Advocates Network (CYAN) initiatives.

Organized by the Council for the Welfare of Children, the event gathered 80 children across the nation, together with duty bearers, government officials, and partners. The event emphasized the importance of meaningful child participation and the need to create safe and supportive spaces where they can contribute to shaping their future.

Beyond the conference, this message for the children and youth continues:

Another milestone for Child Protection in Eastern Samar! 🌟

The Office of the Provincial Prosecutor of Eastern Samar (OPP Eastern Samar - Main) has officially received Anatomically Correct Dolls (ACDs), a vital tool for ensuring young survivors’ engagement with the courts remains child-sensitive and survivor-centered.

This milestone has been made possible by Consuelo’s partnership with the Philippine Judicial Academy (The Judicial Academy Philippines), which goes back from 2014. 🤝 Through the continued distribution of ACDs to Family Courts Judges who have completed their Competency Enhancement Training (CET) on handling cases involving children, more survivors are better supported during forensic interviews and judicial proceedings.

This ongoing support is crucial now more than ever. Across the nation, at least 41 survivors have been rescued in anti-online sexual abuse operations between January and February. Some of them are children of unimaginable age range. As efforts continue to address existing and emerging forms of harm, anatomically-correct dolls can play a crucial role in helping children share their testimonies safely, accurately, and without retraumatization.

Consuelo, together with its partners, remains committed to strengthening systems for child protection, building communities . 🌹

As we wrap up Women’s month, let us honor the dreamers who will lead us next: the girls. 👱🏻‍♀️👩🏻‍🦰👩🏻👧🏽👧🏾

But their dreams also require our protection. Between 2020 and 2024, pregnancies among girls aged 10-14 in the Philippines rose 71%, with an 8% year-on-year increase from 2023 to 2024. This emphasizes an urgent need to expand access to reproductive health services and education.

This year’s , we stand behind the theme Katawan Ko, Karapatan Ko: Edukasyon Tungo sa Malaya at Ligtas na Pagpapasya (My Body, My Rights: Education Towards Safe and Informed Choices). Through our community, shelter-based, and government partners like the Council for the Welfare of Children, we offer evidence-based, age-appropriate information 📚 and support 🌹 for young girls under our collective care. We believe that every girl deserves to be equipped with knowledge, resources, and confidence to own her body, relationships, and future. ✨

Protecting children online starts with us, Ako at Ikaw! 🛡️

We’ve seen lately how technologies meant to transform lives are being misused at the expense of our safety, dignity, and well-being, including our children’s. Just recently, UNICEF warned that at least 1.2 million children across 11 countries, including the Philippines, reported cases of their images being used in exploitative deepfakes over the past year. 🚩 Behind each altered image is real harm and a call for urgent action.

This year’s , 🛜 we enjoin partners and allies in renewing our commitment to keeping children from online harms 🚫 while ensuring their voices 📣 lead the way in digital well-being.

Our Managing Director, Dr. Yella Castillo, reminded us during the celebration that “while emerging technologies are already shaping Ako, Ikaw, at ang mga bata, the core of protection remains also with us: Ako at Ikaw.” 🫶🏽

We stand with Plan International Pilipinas, our fellow institutions, policymakers, and partners in ensuring Artificial Intelligence and similar technologies serve not just as tools for progress, but also as barriers against harm for every child.
