Mercy Ships NZ Mercy Ships Mercy Ships, a faith-base not-for-profit NGO, operates hospital ships which provide free surgical services for the poorest nations of the earth.

Staffed by volunteer doctors, dentists, nurses and other health care and maritime professionals, the Africa Mercy and Global Mercy are dedicated to providing life-transforming surgery and medical capacity building in sub-Saharan Africa.

At school, classmates teased him about his hand. On the farm, gripping the tools he used to help his father and brothers was difficult.

Once a Mercy Ships trainee, Dr. Abram Wodomé became a mentor, sharing his cataract surgery expertise with other eye specialists.

Through his training partnership with Mercy Ships, ophthalmologists developed their surgical skills, with some going on to train others and extend the impact beyond their own practice.

Samuel is a mechanic fitter from Kumasi in Ghana’s Ashanti Region and a father of five children, the youngest of whom is seven. Since his wife passed away, he has been raising them alone.
A year ago, Samuel lost his sight because of cataracts, affecting his ability to work and care for his family. “Now I’m unable to do anything, not even work or see properly during the day
or at night,” he shared.
Samuel became the first patient to receive surgery on board the during Mercy Ships’ 2026 field service in Ghana.
“I will be happy to see properly,” he said. “I will be able to testify to the work of Mercy Ships.”

5-year-old Joseph has never attended school because his parents feared he would be mocked for his knock knees. His family first noticed that his legs were different when he began walking.
“When my son turned three, I suggested that he start school, but my husband said, ‘He will be mocked and laughed at,’” shared his mother, Gloria. “Even in our community, both adults and children laugh at him, and he always comes home crying.”
