Today is International Day of Play 🎉

Play isn't just about having fun, it's how young people build confidence, connection, creativity and resilience.

Some of the activities our mentors and young people enjoy together include kicking a ball around at the park, playing board games, getting creative with arts and crafts, sharing a milkshake, or simply going for a walk together.

Sometimes the biggest changes happen during these simple moments. A game, a laugh, or a shared experience can be the start of a trusted relationship that helps a young person thrive.

Happy International Day of Play!

Twenty-six weeks of mentoring can make a huge difference in a young person's life.

Over the past six months, Jayden* has become more relaxed and open, more willing to talk about what's going on in his world, and more confident asking for advice and support.

It's a reminder that sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is simply show up, consistently.

Thank you to our incredible volunteer mentors who make stories like this possible.

Each one means a young person now has someone in their corner, showing up, week after week. 💛

Here’s to what’s ahead, and thank you to everyone who helps make these connections possible.

Behind every mentoring relationship is a team making it possible. 💪

Thanks to the generous support of Te Rau Puāwai Education Trust, we’re able to invest in our frontline programme team... the people who build relationships, support mentors and whānau, and ensure young people are consistently supported week to week 💛

Biggest myth about mentoring?

That you need lots of time or special skills.

In reality, it’s just being there, like a friend, like an aunty, someone on their team. 💛

Does one hour a week matter?

Consistently showing up builds trust, confidence, and real change over time.

It’s not about having all the answers, it’s about being there. 💛

“I get a real sense of purpose.” 💛

Lisa joined Upside to give back and found a meaningful connection she didn’t expect.

Just one hour a week can make a real difference.

🚨 20 places available

We’ve partnered with the University of Auckland to invite 20 Aucklanders to take part in a first-of-its-kind study exploring how mentoring a young person can impact your own wellbeing.

💛 Build real connection
💛 Grow your sense of purpose
💛 Be part of something that genuinely matters

You don’t need experience, just a willingness to show up.

💬 “People sign up to help a young person… but what they don’t expect is how much it changes them.”

If this is something you’ve been thinking about, we’d love you to be part of it.

103 young people, mentors, and whānau came together for a day that was about so much more than the beach.

It was about connection, belonging, and trying something new in a safe, supportive environment 💛

From kayaking and ski biscuiting to volleyball, games in the sand, and a big shared lunch.

For many, it was their first time on the water. Moments like these build confidence, courage, and a willingness to step outside comfort zones.

Here’s what some of our young people had to say:

✨ “I have never done kayaking before and it was scary but fun at the same time.”
✨ “The whole day was fun.”
✨ “It was amazing, the first time I'd done it.”

A huge thanks to Aktive and the Tū Manawa Active Aotearoa fund and our everyone else who made this day possible 🙌
