ADC Microfinance

ADC Microfinance ADC is a not-for-profit charity that supports microfinance initiatives in developing countries. Our core purpose is to provide both. They are usually women.

We are committed to poverty alleviation and believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to improve their own life. At ADC we are compelled to act - to find innovative solutions with the largest impact. We believe that small actions can turn the tide on global poverty. We partner with locally owned microfinance institutions and help build financial infrastructure to serve people living in povert

y. ADC sees the poor as industrious, resourceful and masters of their own destiny; they just need access to capital and a bit of support. Our clients are the marginalised business entrepreneurs of northwest Myanmar. They are the rickshaw drivers, the rice and tea makers, the tailors, the booksellers, the butchers, and the weavers of some of the poorest communities in the world. They continue to inspire us every single day.

We'll be selling the stunning Moi Wines 2021 Filigree Fumé by the glass at our upcoming Quiz Night!

Moi Wines is the brainchild of a locally grown winemaker: Renée Dale, born and raised in Mt Albert, has been producing wines under her own brand since 2012. Her passion lies in using locally foraged grapes from Auckland - Tāmaki Makaurau. Renée's intention is to celebrate the terroir of her home by creating premium, boutique wines that leave a lasting impact both on the palate, and her community.

Moi Wines have generously donated their product to ADC to sell so we can maximise funds raised on the night. How epic is that?! Thanks Renée 💚

Following Rachael's introduction, we'd also like to welcome another amazing wahine, Tasha Lea, to the ADC Board.

Tasha recently completed her Masters of Law at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, where she specialised in environmental law and sustainable development. Growing up in Cambridge, Tasha completed her law degree at Otago University, before heading to Wellington to work in private practice. However post-Masters, Tasha is staying on in Sydney working with Pollination, a specialist climate change investment and advisory firm - a job which aligns with her love for the environment and all things outdoors.

She is not a new face around here! She has been part of the ADC team since 2019, when she started as a Board Intern. Her motivation to support the work of ADC stems from her staunch belief in the power of microfinance as a mechanism for delivering sustainable development and community empowerment.

Tasha has loved working with the ADC team over the last few years, and is thrilled to continue to bring her experience in legal and risk management to the Board.

We're thrilled to welcome two new members to the ADC Board. First up, we'd like to introduce Rachael Pizey. Rachael, who lives in Auckland, is the current Manager Revenue Alliances at Air New Zealand.

With prior experience in commercial roles across mining, electricity, waste management and aviation sectors, Rachael brings a wealth of commercial, economic and partnership skills to our Board.

Inspired by the commitment of ADC co-founders, Andrew and Geoff, Rachael's drive to join the Board are two-fold: "to support the work of this incredible, tenacious team, and to continue supporting the people of Myanmar through the renewable power of microfinance."

These numbers are all thanks to you. Thanks to everyone who donates to ADC, you're making a tremendous difference to people in Myanmar.

As one our co-founders Geoff says, "Distance is no excuse for us getting out there and addressing global issues. Microfinance has such an amazing ability to change to many lives. It’s a really exciting thing to be a part of."

Aye Soe is a highly entrepreneurial woman who runs not one, but three businesses in Myanmar!

She runs a milk production business, sells vegetables in her local village and runs a weaving business which employs five local women. These women come from rural areas and stay with her in her home for up to three years, while she trains them how to weave traditional cloth. She feeds and houses them, and as their skills increase, she increases their salary.

Aye Soe’s biggest challenge is getting access to more capital to expand her businesses. Microfinance has been crucial in helping her do so, and it's allowed her to rebuild her businesses after a major setback a few years ago.

A fire destroyed her house and storage shed. Then disastrous floods wiped out most of her weaving stock and equipment.

A small loan from our in-country partner, ZMF, allowed Aye Soe to purchase new looms and materials for weaving. She said that without access to microfinance, she would've had to sell her gold jewellery (which has cultural significance to the Burmese) to raise capital.

Aye Soe is busy, determined and driven to succeed. She is focused on providing a good education to her daughter. She is the perfect example of why we do what we do 💚

Myanmar ranks at 149 of 191 countries on the Human Development Index (HDI). Created by the United Nations Development Programme, HDI assesses three basic dimensions of human development: a long and healthy life; access to knowledge; and a decent standard of living. Life expectancy at birth sits at age 65.7 years, the average number of years at school is 6.4 years, and the gross national income per capita is $3,851. To give some perspective, the equivalent figures for New Zealand sit at 82.5 years, 12.9 years, and $44,057.

Since the military takeover in 2020, poverty in Myanmar is estimated to have doubled, with about 40% of the population living below the national poverty line. Nearly a decade of progress on poverty reduction has been undone.

ADC is making a difference. By providing microloans and business training to clients in Myanmar, we are providing the tools for people to create a sustainable income for themselves, and lift themselves out of poverty. To all of you who support us by reading our newsletters, donating to us, giving through
One Percent Collective, Givealittle and The Good Registry, or coming to our events. 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐤 𝐲𝐨𝐮.
