Night Ninjas

NZ Road Relays 2026

When the Night Ninjas started the journey to becoming a fully affiliated running club, amongst other things, one of the dreams was to become a big enough and serious enough club to be able to send a team to NZ Road Relays… and to work towards achieving a medal one day.

Within the first year of becoming a club, the first group of Ninjas achieved the goal of taking to the national stage in Taupo (and came close enough to the podium to know that it could be possible)

Last year, our amazing Master Women’s achieved the next goal of earning a bronze medal, and we got to see a Ninja team on the national podium for the first time.

This year, with support from Pub Charity Limited and proudly kitted out in our special-edition Forty Thieves Race singlets, we sent SEVEN teams to the Manawatū to take on the very best in New Zealand.

We came away with FOUR team medals — ONE GOLD, TWO SILVERS and ONE BRONZE — a fantastic achievement against some of the country’s best

Go Ninjas! 🧡🥷

On Sunday we had our annual general meeting and prizegiving. This was a wonderful way to celebrate another amazing year for the Night Ninjas club.

Winners of the prestigious Ninja awards for 2026:

Ninja Champs (Millwater Half Marathon)
Grand Shinobi - Fastest Male: Brent Kelly (1:17:00)
Third win in last 4 years. .

Grand Kunoichi - Fastest Female: Maddie Dillon (1:28:42). It’s been awesome to see Maddie back to her best again this year winning this cup for the first time.

Fastest Walker: Linda Metzger (2:52:57). Walking a sub 3 hour half marathon is seriously moving.

Ninja Grand Champ (for biggest improvement since last year): Curtis Parrington
Curtis improved his time from 1:44:25 to 1:28:39!
Honourable mention for Isaac Kirkpatrick improving from 1:30:35 to 1:20:02

Ninja of the Year Award:
Performance Award: Troy Harold - for setting new NZ M55 records in both the marathon (2:39:13) and half marathon (1:16:47), in the process breaking a record set over 40 years ago by legendary NZ masters runner Derek Turnbull

Aspiring Talent: Kate Moyle - for her amazing debuts this year in the Ironman (9:54:46) and the marathon (2:58:19). These are incredible performances for anyone, let alone for a first timer - but coming off the back of months of dedicated training. Hard work pays off.

Service Award: Karen Donaldson-Barron and Brad Barron for the time and care they have devoted to our junior Ninjas, helping these youngsters develop a love of running. Anyone who has ever worked with kids will know what a big job this is but the fruits of that can be seen in the number of juniors who are stepping up to have a go at things like cross country this year.

Congratulations to the winners and also to the worthy candidates who were nominated
