East Skate Club

East Skate Club East Skate Club is a non profit, registered charity and sports club. We are officially affiliated with NZ Skate.

We are on a mission to promote skate sports and skate facilities as a place to have fun, get fit, meet amazing people and be safe. East Skate Club officially became an Incorporated charity in December 2020, to address the needs of a growing number of children and youth today who are being excluded from traditional, organised sports because of its hyper competitive culture, its focus on talent iden

tification and exclusion of participation from lack of access including socio-cultural and socio-economic reasons. Our focus is getting kids off the couches and devices and developing recreational skateboarding skills and social connections. The big picture on inactive populations, found in NZ Sport insight shows a need for continued development of active recreational programmes for our tamariki and rangatahi. Within the Howick Local Board, 10% and 14% of tamariki and rangatahi, respectively, are “inactive”. In addition, NZ Sport research finds that there is an emerging downward trend in belonging to a team or club, with most weekly participation being for children in non-competitive sports and activities. We are a community-led organisation that delivers a range of active recreational programmes including multiple beginners skate lessons, during school term, to children in the Howick and Pakuranga region. In addition, we advocate on behalf of the voices in the community to develop our skateboard parks and facilities ensuring that they are available for everyone to access and are safe and function for the sport. We host regular pop-up skateboarding sessions, to activate interest in skateboarding within the community, as well as monthly BBQs at our local, Lloyd Elsmore skatepark. We welcome whanau as this enhances the quality of our programme. We are fortunate to have a large group of volunteers as well as valuable relationships with local companies. We have a wealth of talent within the organisation including pro-skaters who are mentors and trainers in our skate lessons, and who train up and pave the way for future skateboard trainers.

Skatepark etiquette should be taught too.

A lot of conflict at skateparks does not come from bad people — it comes from a lack of awareness.
Many beginners, parents, and new users simply have never been shown the basic flow of a skatepark:

where to stand
when to wait
how to look before dropping in
why one rider at a time on an obstacle matters

That lack of understanding can create safety issues, frustration, and unnecessary tension for everyone.

Just like we teach kids how to ride, we should also be teaching skatepark etiquette.

A little knowledge goes a long way:
✅ Better safety
✅ Less conflict
✅ More confidence for beginners
✅ More fun for everyone
✅ Stronger skatepark communities

If we want skateparks to be welcoming, inclusive, and well-used community spaces, etiquette education needs to be part of the conversation.

Good parks don’t just happen — they’re built by good habits, shared respect, and community understanding.

Stanmore Bay Skatepark resurfacing begins today, with the contractor advising it is expected to take around 6 or so weeks.
The condition of the concrete is really bad, and will be grinded back, with areas of coping to be cut out, and re poured with new steel to allow it to be grindable again. Stay tuned for before and after shots!

🛹 Have Your Say on Auckland’s Skateparks! 🛹

Calling all skaters, scooter riders, BMXers, families and locals 👇

Auckland Council is developing a regionwide plan for skateparks, and your feedback is really important to help shape what these spaces look like in the future.

These parks aren’t just for sport, they’re where our young people connect, stay active and build confidence 💛

We want to know:
✔️ What’s working
✔️ What’s not
✔️ Where we need to invest

As our city grows, it’s important we get this right – making sure skateparks are safe, inclusive, well-located and fit for purpose for everyone who uses them.

📣 Consultation is open until 1 June 2026
