🌿 Happy World Elephant Day 🌿
Today, we pause to honour the gentle giants who walk this earth with wisdom older than our own.
Elephants are not machines. They are not tools. They are not commodities.
They are sentient beings with hearts that love, minds that remember, and spirits that grieve. They roam the jungles in herds, bound by bonds that last a lifetime. They comfort one another in sorrow, celebrate in joy, and mourn their dead with a reverence that humbles us.
But in Nepal, many elephants know a very different reality.
Instead of roaming free, they are chained. Instead of walking with their families, they stand alone in cramped shelters. Instead of living with dignity, they are used for safaris, forced to carry heavy loads, and subjected to training that breaks their spirits.
This is not who they are meant to be.
Elephants are supposed to be wild. Elephants are supposed to be free. Elephants are supposed to be loved, not used.
In 2026, Animal Nepal has received volumes of messages from people in Nepal and around the world who feel the same way. They have seen the chains. They have watched the videos. They have wept for the mothers and calves. And they have asked us to speak for the voiceless and demand answers about the malpractice in how elephants are kept and treated.
We have also seen the evidence ourselves. In 2014, our own survey found that 82% of elephants in Sauraha lived in unsuitable conditions – chained, beaten, and forced to work even when sick or blind.
This World Elephant Day, we cannot simply celebrate elephants. We must stand for them.
For the mother who should never be separated from her calf.
For the elephant who should never be forced to work while sick.
For the young who should grow up without fear.
For every elephant who deserves to live with dignity.
We dream of a Nepal where elephants are protected, not exploited—where their families remain together, their freedom matters more than entertainment, and compassion is stronger than commerce.
Because elephants do not need us to make them extraordinary.
They already are.
They need us to give back what was theirs all along:
Not chains. Not suffering. Not forced breeding.
But freedom. Family. And the right to simply exist, as the gentle, intelligent, magnificent souls they are.
Their freedom. Their families. Their dignity. Their lives. 🐘🌿
🌿 विश्व हात्ती दिवसको शुभकामना 🌿
आज हामी मानव सभ्यताभन्दा पनि पुरानो ज्ञान बोकेर यस पृथ्वीमा हिँड्ने यी विशाल र कोमल जीवलाई सम्मान गर्न केही क्षण रोकिऔँ।
हात्ती मेसिन होइनन्। उनीहरू साधन होइनन्। उनीहरू वस्तु होइनन्।
उनीहरू माया गर्ने मुटु, सम्झने मस्तिष्क र शोक महसुस गर्ने आत्मा भएका संवेदनशील प्राणी हुन्। उनीहरू जंगलमा बथानसँगै विचरण गर्छन्, जीवनभर कायम रहने सम्बन्धमा बाँधिएका हुन्छन्। दुःखमा एकअर्कालाई सान्त्वना दिन्छन्, खुसीमा रमाउँछन् र आफ्ना प्रियजनको मृत्युमा हामीलाई समेत नतमस्तक बनाउने गरी शोक मनाउँछन्।
तर नेपालमा धेरै हात्तीहरूले बिल्कुलै फरक वास्तविकता भोगिरहेका छन्।
स्वतन्त्र रूपमा विचरण गर्नुपर्ने हात्तीहरू साङ्लाले बाँधिन्छन्। आफ्नो परिवारसँग हिँड्नुपर्ने हात्तीहरू साँघुरा आश्रयस्थलमा एक्लै उभिन बाध्य हुन्छन्। सम्मानका साथ बाँच्नुपर्ने हात्तीहरू सफारीका लागि प्रयोग गरिन्छन्, भारी बोझ बोक्न बाध्य पारिन्छन् र उनीहरूको आत्मा नै तोड्ने किसिमको प्रशिक्षणबाट गुज्रिन्छन्।
हात्तीहरू जंगली हुनुपर्छ। हात्तीहरू स्वतन्त्र हुनुपर्छ। हात्तीहरूलाई प्रयोग होइन, माया गरिनुपर्छ।
सन् २०२६ मा, नेपाल तथा विश्वभरिबाट Animal Nepal मा ठूलो संख्यामा सन्देशहरू आइरहेका छन्। मानिसहरूले साङ्ला देखेका छन्। भिडियोहरू हेरेका छन्। आमा हात्ती र बच्चाहरूका लागि आँसु बगाएका छन्। र उनीहरूले आवाजविहीन हात्तीहरूको पक्षमा बोल्न तथा हात्तीहरूलाई राख्ने र व्यवहार गर्ने क्रममा भइरहेको गलत अभ्यासबारे जवाफ माग्न हामीलाई आग्रह गरेका छन्।
हामीले यसको प्रमाण आफैँले पनि देखेका छौँ। सन् २०१४ मा गरिएको हाम्रो आफ्नै सर्वेक्षणले सौराहाका ८२% हात्ती अनुपयुक्त परिस्थितिमा रहेको पत्ता लगाएको थियो—साङ्लाले बाँधिएका, कुटपिट सहन बाध्य पारिएका र बिरामी वा दृष्टिविहीन हुँदा समेत काम गर्न लगाइएका हात्तीहरू।
यस विश्व हात्ती दिवसमा, हामी हात्तीलाई केवल सम्झन सक्दैनौँ। हामी उनीहरूको पक्षमा उभिनैपर्छ।
त्यो आमाका लागि, जसलाई आफ्नो बच्चाबाट कहिल्यै अलग गरिनु हुँदैन।
त्यो हात्तीका लागि, जसलाई बिरामी हुँदा काम गर्न बाध्य पारिनु हुँदैन।
त्यो बच्चा हात्तीका लागि, जसले डरबिना हुर्कन पाउनुपर्छ।
र हरेक हात्तीका लागि, जसले सम्मानका साथ बाँच्न पाउनुपर्छ।
हामी यस्तो नेपाल चाहन्छौँ जहाँ हात्तीको संरक्षण होस्, शोषण होइन—जहाँ उनीहरूको परिवार सँगै रहोस्, उनीहरूको स्वतन्त्रता मनोरञ्जनभन्दा महत्वपूर्ण होस् र व्यापारभन्दा करुणा बलियो होस्।
किनकि हात्तीलाई महान बनाउन हामीलाई केही गर्नुपर्दैन।
उनीहरू आफैँमा महान छन्।
उनीहरूलाई सुरुदेखि नै आफ्नै रहेको कुरा हामीले फिर्ता दिनुपर्छ:
साङ्ला होइन। पीडा होइन। जबर्जस्ती प्रजनन होइन।
बरु स्वतन्त्रता। परिवार। र यी कोमल, बुद्धिमान र अद्भुत आत्माहरूले केवल आफ्नो अस्तित्वलाई आफ्नै स्वभावअनुसार बाँच्न पाउने अधिकार।
उनीहरूको स्वतन्त्रता। उनीहरूको परिवार। उनीहरूको सम्मान। उनीहरूको जीवन। 🐘🌿
यस विश्व हात्ती दिवसमा, हात्तीलाई हात्ती भएर बाँच्न दिऔँ।
