She bought land for a house. She built a toilet, because for her daughters and daughter-in-law, safety could not wait.

Sarita's story from Saptari, on what "home" really means for women and girls. Read more: https://habitatnepal.org/the-house-can-wait/

In Saptari, a family bought land for a home and built a toilet instead. It was not a compromise. It was a decision about what safety means.  In Birpur Tole, Saptari, the plot of land Sarita Devi Ram’s family purchased was meant for a house. They built a toilet instead. Sarita’s, 40, family, ho...

Sulochana was home when she came across a notice for a WASH volunteer position. What began as a casual decision quickly turned into a strong sense of purpose. Sulochana felt that her village was lagging behind in maintaining cleanliness at the household and community level. She had seen how poor WASH practices were leading to frequent illness, disease, and, in some cases, even loss of life.

She now goes door to door, sits with women in her community, and talks about the small, everyday things that keep a family healthy. She's reached more than 18 women in her first round of sessions alone. But it's the conversations between sessions, squeezed in between cooking and caring for her own family, that she says matter just as much.

"Only when people truly change their habits and live healthier lives will I feel that I have accomplished something," Sulochana says. Not recognition. Not numbers. Just people, living better. On World Health Day, we're thinking of everyone who works quietly, and persistently, toward that kind of change.

Survivors of the devastating 2015 earthquake, Tahal and Karmasara lost nearly everything. But in 2017, Habitat for Humanity Nepal, in collaboration with partner organization and Panchkhal municipality, were able to help them build a new, safe home in Kavre district.

Tahal, who lives with a disability, is lovingly cared for by his wife, Karmasara. Their bond is one of deep compassion and partnership. Today, their Habitat home stands as a symbol of resilience and unconditional love, a place where they continue to support each other, surrounded by peace and belonging

At Habitat Nepal, we believe that safe housing is the foundation for strength, stability, and self-reliance. Together, we empower families like Tahal and Karmasara to rebuild not just their homes, but their futures.

An afternoon of reflection, learning, and appreciation 🌸

Our International Women’s Day gathering brought colleagues together to share powerful and personal stories of impact, celebrate the women who shape our lives, and reflect on our journeys as professionals and individuals.

A highlight of the session was the insightful talk by Durga Karki, who took us through the history of International Women’s Day, unpacking its socio-political and economic roots. Her session encouraged us to think more critically about how these contexts shape the realities of the communities we work with, and how they can inform more thoughtful, inclusive, and effective program design.

The session reminded us that meaningful change begins with understanding, empathy, and reflection.
