From 22–24 April 2026, civil society organizations (CSOs) and children from five provinces of Nepal joined a three-day training on Child Rights Programming and Child Rights Monitoring. The training focused on helping participants turn child rights principles into practical action and build programs that place children at the center.

Special attention was given to ethical and meaningful child participation, making sure children are not only included but actively heard in decisions that affect them. Sessions also covered gender equality, disability and social inclusion (GEDSI), along with the need to include environmental and climate risk considerations across programs.

Participants also learned about child rights monitoring, including national and international human rights mechanisms, monitoring tools and processes, ethical data collection, analysis, and the use of evidence to support advocacy and State accountability.

By the end of the training, participants were better prepared to design, implement, and monitor child rights-based programs and use evidence to influence policies, budgets, services, and practices for children across Nepal.

Today marks 11 years since the devastating 2015 Gorkha Earthquake, a 7.8 magnitude disaster that claimed more than 9,000 lives. When it struck, Save the Children was among the first responders, reaching over 580,000 people, including 352,000 children, with life-saving support. This included temporary shelters, access to clean water and sanitation, and essential non-food items. We also established temporary learning centres, provided psychosocial support, and helped children regain a sense of normalcy amid the chaos.

Eleven years on, we continue to work alongside local governments to ensure preparedness goes beyond plans, it must centre people. By strengthening local emergency operations centres, disaster management committees, and school-based disaster risk reduction programmes, we are building communities’ capacity to anticipate, respond to, and recover from disasters. At the heart of this work is child protection, ensuring children’s needs are not only addressed after a crisis, but anticipated well before it strikes.

We believe disaster preparedness must shift from “plans to people.” Most importantly, humanitarian action must be localized, with diversity, inclusion, and the meaningful engagement of children and communities placed at the centre, not treated as an afterthought in how we design, deliver, and evaluate impact.

"When The Earth Shook" is a video anthology of first-hand accounts from frontline staff and survivors, stories of individuals who risked their lives 11 years ago. These narratives reflect the courage, compassion, and community spirit that carried Nepal through one of its darkest chapters and fueled one of the largest humanitarian responses in its history.

Hot off the press!

Do take a moment to read Save the Children Nepal’s 2025 Annual Snapshot. It captures key highlights from the past year and reflects how, through our collective efforts, we have continued to advance children’s rights and well-being.

The snapshot delivers a non-negotiable message, achieving meaningful impact for children is not possible in isolation. It requires stronger partnerships with children, communities, partners, development actors, and stakeholders. Most importantly, the stories, projects, campaigns, and partnerships featured in the snapshot clearly highlights that we cannot advance children’s rights if we are not meaningfully partnering with children and the communities we work with and for.

Nineteen children representing all seven provinces of Nepal came together to discuss issues that directly and indirectly impact children across the country, while strengthening their skills to advocate, influence, and engage in conversations from local to national levels.

As part of the three-day National Child Advocate Council (NCAC) reformation and capacity-strengthening training, these child advocates are stepping into leadership roles within NCAC. They will represent the diverse voices of children nationwide in national-level discourse and platforms, while advancing child and youth leadership, voice, and agency.

The programme is supported by Save the Children through the SIDA project and is led by Consortium Nepal.
