๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ช Explore Scholarship Spotlight: Lucas in Kenya!
This July, EIL Explore Scholarship winner Lucas Galvin set off on a life-changing adventure to Kenya as part of the AFS Kenya Climate Change & Wildlife Conservation Programme. ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ˜

Over 15 incredible days, Lucas travelled through Nairobi, Kitengela, Naivasha, Narok and the Maasai Mara, experiencing just how diverse Kenya is. From exploring Nairobi and learning about renewable energy at Ngong Wind Farm and Olkaria Geothermal Power Station, to a boat trip on Lake Naivasha and an unforgettable game drive in the Maasai Mara, every stop brought something completely new.

One of the most special parts of Lucas's experience was staying with a Kenyan host family. Being welcomed into a local home gave him the opportunity to experience everyday life and Kenyan culture in a way that simply isn't possible as a tourist.

And the people made the journey even more memorable. โค๏ธ Lucas formed friendships with young people from Kenya, the USA and Hong Kong, sharing his own Irish culture โ˜˜๏ธ while learning about their lives, cultures and perspectives.

Along the way, he learned about climate change, wildlife conservation, sustainability and community action, but he also learned more about himself, gaining independence, confidence and a new perspective on the world. ๐ŸŒŽ

That's what Explore is all about: going somewhere new, becoming part of another community, building friendships across cultures and coming home changed by the experience.
๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ชโœˆ๏ธ๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ช One adventure, countless memories and friendships that cross continents.

20/08/2026

At EIL/AFS Ireland, we believe that some of life's most important learning happens beyond the classroom. Education is found in conversations, shared experiences, communities, creative spaces, and the people who encourage us to grow.

Mentorship and positive role models can have a lasting impact on a young person's confidence, sense of purpose, and belief that they can make a difference. Alongside the lifelong friendships they built with their Irish and American peers, our five Youth Activists at the Governor's Institutes of VT Youth Activist Program were inspired by an incredible team of adults who challenged, supported, and encouraged them every step of the way.

A heartfelt thank you to the programme's director, coordinators, academic staff, guest speakers, residential assistants, health team, driver, volunteers, and everyone who made GIVYA 2026 such a meaningful experience.

Together, we're building a global community of young changemakers; one connection, one conversation, and one act of courage at a time.
