🎥 Great to see Dr Mike Shewring, Director of Adfer Natur CIC and Trustee of Wild Cymru, sharing his knowledge and expertise!

Mike brings a wealth of experience in ecology, conservation and habitat restoration, and we’re proud to have him as part of the Adfer team. 💚

🌿 Have a listen to what he has to say!

💚 When you find your first quaking mire and can’t contain your excitement… neither can the ground! 😂🌿

Carys and Joel began a peatland survey near Tredegar yesterday for Torfaen Council, and this wonderfully wobbly discovery stole the show!

A quaking mire does exactly what it says on the tin — its waterlogged vegetation mat moves beneath your feet. Think nature’s very own jelly… with considerably more peat! 🤣

Watch the wobble! 💚

🌿 Dragonflies on the Bog: restoring vital bog pools

What a difference habitat restoration can make!

These photos from this season show the contrast between an unimproved bog pool that is drying out and an improved pool created through last year’s Dragonflies on the Bog project.
The restored pool is looking healthy and full of water, providing the habitat our target species need.

This summer, our volunteers and partners Glencoe National Nature Reserve NTS have been back out surveying the site, with target species Azure Hawker, Northern Emerald and White-faced Darter all recorded!

It’s brilliant to see this work creating better habitat for some of Scotland’s rarest dragonflies and damselflies.

Your donation to our Help Dragonflies Thrive fundraiser could help us achieve more work like this, restoring and creating vital habitat for dragonflies across the UK.

🌱 Llangynidr Show 2026 🌱

Today Carys has been representing Adfer Natur CIC at the fantastic Llangynidr Show!

It was great to spend the day chatting with farmers, landowners, local residents and Bannau Brycheiniog National Park representatives about the peatlands of the local area — the challenges they face, why they matter, and the ways Adfer Natur can help protect, restore and better understand these important habitats.

The weather was a little iffy at times 🌦️, but it certainly didn’t dampen the day! A fabulous community show, lots of interesting conversations and a really worthwhile day all round.

A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by for a chat, asked questions or shared their own knowledge and experiences of the local landscape.

We’re already looking forward to returning to Llangynidr in 2027, when we hope to continue the conversation with a talk in the village hall about peatlands, restoration and the work of Adfer Natur. 🌿

💚 We had a wonderful day at the Gower Show today! 🌿

It was a pleasure chatting with farmers, local representatives and visitors about the work of Adfer Natur CIC, peatland restoration and our upcoming surveys on Gower.

It was also fantastic to see so many environmental organisations represented and to share ideas with people who care deeply about Wales’s wildlife, landscapes and farming communities.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by for a chat—we thoroughly enjoyed meeting you! 💚

💚 Last week, Mike Shewring & Joey Pickard from Adfer Natur CIC delivered training for BSG Ecology on peatland habitat management design.

As part of the training, the group visited Cregan, a forest-to-bog peatland site delivered in 2023 by the Lost Peatlands Project - Prosiect Adfer Mawndiroedd
with the restoration designed by Mike and Joey.

Since the restoration was completed, the site has developed on an excellent trajectory and is now supporting water vole. This species had not previously been recorded at the site, but last week we found latrines within the peatland restoration area.

This is a fantastic result for the species and demonstrates the benefits peatland restoration can have for biodiversity enhancement over a very short timescale. We can’t wait to see how the site develops further!

✨ It’s International Bog Day! ✨

Did you know that peatbogs are some of the most valuable ecosystems in the world? Covering just 3% of the Earth’s land surface, peatbogs store more carbon than all other vegetation types in the world combined! And that’s not all – peatbogs support a vast number of plant and animal species, they protect against floods and purify water.

Peat is made up of decomposed plants, which build up over thousands of years to create a rich, spongy soil. It can take a year for just 1mm of peat to form, which is why it is so important to protect this vital habitat from afforestation, global warming, commercial harvesting, and draining!

One of RCT’s best known peatbog can be found at the glacial cwm of Cwmparc – be sure to pay a visit!

🌿 HAPPY WORLD BOG DAY! 🌿

💚 For us at Adfer Natur CIC, peatlands aren’t just something we talk about — they’re landscapes we spend a lot of time walking through, probing, surveying and studying (usually while getting rather wet and muddy!). 🥾

From assessing peat depth and condition in the field, to understanding damaged peatlands and opportunities for restoration, through to sharing knowledge and engaging people with these extraordinary habitats — peatlands are at the heart of what we do.

Healthy peatlands store carbon, regulate water and support specialised wildlife, while their layers hold an environmental record stretching back thousands of years.

But many of our peatlands have been damaged, and understanding their condition is an important first step towards protecting and restoring them.

💚 This World Bog Day, we’re celebrating the bogs themselves — but also the people working to understand, restore and champion them.

Because for Adfer Natur CIC, it really is about People + Peatlands. 💚

Happy World Bog Day!💚
