Keep your home cool and save energy this summer 🌍💡
Hot weather can make homes uncomfortable, but a few simple changes can help keep your house cooler while lowering energy use too:
• Keep curtains, blinds, and windows closed during the hottest part of the day to keep heat out.
• Open windows later in the evening or early morning when the air outside is cooler.
• Use fans instead of air conditioning where possible because they use far less energy.
• Avoid using ovens, tumble dryers, and other heat-producing appliances during peak heat.
• Dry clothes outside instead of using the tumble dryer.
• Keep your fridge and freezer stocked so they stay cooler more efficiently.
• Switch off lights and appliances when not in use to reduce heat and save electricity.
• Try cold meals or batch cooking earlier in the day to avoid heating up your kitchen.
• If you have outdoor shade, keep windows on the shaded side open to help air flow through your home.
If your home has a poor EPC rating, it can become especially uncomfortable during warmer weather, as heat can build up more easily indoors. One simple tip is to repurpose radiator reflector panels as temporary sun reflectors. By placing them over windows that receive direct sunlight, you can help reflect heat away from your home and keep rooms cooler. For those who meet our eligibility criteria, we provide free radiator reflectors as part of our Warm Packs. Visit us at an upcoming event or drop into The Environment Centre to find out if you are eligible.
Small energy-saving habits can help keep your home more comfortable throughout the summer and may even help reduce your energy bills.
