Keep your home cool and save energy this summer 🌍💡

Hot weather can make homes uncomfortable, but a few simple changes can help keep your house cooler while lowering energy use too:

• Keep curtains, blinds, and windows closed during the hottest part of the day to keep heat out.
• Open windows later in the evening or early morning when the air outside is cooler.
• Use fans instead of air conditioning where possible because they use far less energy.
• Avoid using ovens, tumble dryers, and other heat-producing appliances during peak heat.
• Dry clothes outside instead of using the tumble dryer.
• Keep your fridge and freezer stocked so they stay cooler more efficiently.
• Switch off lights and appliances when not in use to reduce heat and save electricity.
• Try cold meals or batch cooking earlier in the day to avoid heating up your kitchen.
• If you have outdoor shade, keep windows on the shaded side open to help air flow through your home.

If your home has a poor EPC rating, it can become especially uncomfortable during warmer weather, as heat can build up more easily indoors. One simple tip is to repurpose radiator reflector panels as temporary sun reflectors. By placing them over windows that receive direct sunlight, you can help reflect heat away from your home and keep rooms cooler. For those who meet our eligibility criteria, we provide free radiator reflectors as part of our Warm Packs. Visit us at an upcoming event or drop into The Environment Centre to find out if you are eligible.

Small energy-saving habits can help keep your home more comfortable throughout the summer and may even help reduce your energy bills.

How to bleed a radiator?

Cold radiator? Warm at the bottom but cold at the top? It may need bleeding.
Here’s a quick step-by-step guide:

1️⃣ Turn your heating off and let the radiator cool down.
2️⃣ Place a towel or bowl underneath the valve to catch any drips.
3️⃣ Insert the radiator key into the bleed valve at the top side of the radiator.
4️⃣ Slowly turn the key anti-clockwise until you hear a hissing sound (that’s the trapped air escaping).
5️⃣ Once water starts to trickle out, turn the key clockwise to close it.
6️⃣ Wipe away any water and check the radiator heats evenly.

💡 Top Tip: After bleeding several radiators, check your boiler pressure and top it up if needed.
Share with someone who always says the heating’s broken 😅

The Switched On Energy Hub team have free radiator keys for people who meet a certain criteria, come to see us in The Environment Centre to check your eligibility.

We are open Tuesday-Friday 10 am – 3pm weekly (excluding bank holidays).

💡 Understanding Energy Bills 💡

If your gas or electric bill looks confusing, you’re definitely not alone. Here’s a quick guide to help you understand what you’re paying for 👇

1. Meter readings matter
Your supplier checks your previous reading and your current reading.
The difference = how much energy you used.

2. Unit rate
The energy you use is charged per unit (kWh).
Units used × price per unit = usage cost.

3. Standing charge
This is a daily fee just for being connected to the supply, even if you use nothing.
Number of days × daily charge = standing charge cost.

4. VAT
Most home energy bills include 5% VAT.

5. Total bill
Usage cost + standing charge + VAT = total amount due.

🔥 Gas bills can look extra confusing
Gas meters often measure in m³, then suppliers convert this into kWh before charging you.

📌 Useful numbers on your bill
MPAN = Your electricity supply number (linked to your property).
MPRN = Your gas supply number.
These numbers stay with the property and are useful if switching suppliers or sorting issues.

💰 Top tips:
✔ Check if your bill is based on an actual reading or an estimated reading (estimated readings will have an 'E' next to the number).
✔ Check the meter serial number on your gas or electric meter matches the one on your bill, if it doesn’t, the bill may be linked to the wrong property.

Understanding your bill is the first step to taking control of it. If it doesn’t make sense, ask questions, you have every right to know what you’re paying for.
