Sunderland BME Network

Sunderland BME Network Or charity is Member-led. We have 21 active voluntary/community BME group members as well as a number of Associate Members who support our aims and aspirations.

SBMEN established in 2003 with support from BECON) and Voices . It became a constituted body in May 2005 (its constitutional aims and objectives can be found in appendix 1). SBMEN originally developed as part of a wider Sunderland Community Development Network (SCDN) and from the outset members of SBMEN were also delegates on the newly emerging City of Sunderland Local Strategic Partnership (CoS-

LSP) and on Pentagon Partnership, a sub-regional partnership to represent the VCS on TyneWear Partnership and to influence the Regional Economic Strategy. In April 2004 the Network collaborated with BECON in conducting and launching research into the needs of Black and minority ethnic communities in the City . The research identified the barriers and community development needs of the BME VCS in the City. The research did have some influence upon the agendas of mainstream providers, for example in 2005, the eGovernment Team of Sunderland City Council awarded SBMEN Β£35K capital from Neighbourhood Learning in Deprived Communities in 2005 to purchase ICT equipment so that it could more effectively participate in SCDN and CoS-LSP as part of the eChampions Programme. Early in 2005 SBMEN became a partner in Sunderland Change Up Consortium which was successful in June 2005 in securing around a third of a million pounds investment from Government Office North East for a range of integrated projects to develop VCS infrastructure in the City. In September 2005 SBMEN commissioned PRAXIS, an independent consultancy, to assist its continued development by providing training to the Management Committee, strengthening its networking with partner organisations and agencies, developing a funding strategy and establishing its business plan.

Two years ago, Sunderland experienced widespread civil unrest, with race riots erupting in and around the city centre. The impact of these riots was deeply felt, resulting not only in significant physical destruction but also in considerable emotional distress and anxiety among Global Majority communities. In response to the unrest, Sunderland City Council, alongside its partners, implemented a variety of measures aimed at addressing and reversing the damage caused by these events. BUT the question remains: have circumstances truly changed for those affected? To explore this, SBMEN is conducting a survey to collect the perspectives and opinions of residents who were impacted by the riots in 2024.

What a fantastic day! We enjoyed networking and getting involved in some of the wonderful activities and events taking place in our community. We started with energetic drumming sessions at Friends of the Drop In (FODI) and then headed to the ICOS Family Fun Day at Backhouse Park. It was great to meet new people, catch up with familiar faces and enjoy a fun-filled day together. πŸŒŸπŸŽΆπŸŽ‰
