Sunderland BME Dementia Project

Sunderland BME Dementia Project This project is to help people with dementia and their carers with Information, Advice and Support. Specifically aimed at Black and Minority Ethnic people.

Research conducted by the University of Sunderland found that the people within the BME community in Sunderland were not being diagnosed with dementia due to a lack of support and a lack of awareness within these communities. The key aim of this project is to address this problem by raising awareness and educating the BME community and also to support dementia patients, their families and carers.

The project, named Memory Lane focuses on the following objectives:
• Creating awareness
• Encouraging diagnosis
• Linking patients and carers to mainstream support agencies
• Creating a memory café providing reminiscence activities tailored to suit BME Communities needs
• Representing BME communities on different engagement forum concerning dementia
• Participating in all other activities that are linked to dementia within the city.
