Sometimes the hardest thing for someone experiencing domestic abuse is telling another person what’s happening. The response they receive can either open a door to support or make them feel even more isolated.

You don’t need to have the perfect words. You don’t need all the answers. Simply listening without judgement can make a huge difference.

Helpful responses sound like:
✅“You don’t have to figure this out alone.”
✅“What do you want to do? Can I help with anything”
✅“I’m not sure what to say, but I’m glad you told me.”

Unhelpful responses can shut someone down:
❎ “Why don’t you just leave?”
❎“It’s a private matter, I’m not getting involved.”
❎“I’m sick of hearing about this.”

If you’re worried about someone, helping them think about a safety plan can make a real difference.

Here are a few things to consider together:

Plan ahead: what could they do in certain situations? Who could they call? Keeping important numbers handy can help in an emergency.

Prepare an emergency bag: essentials like ID, medication, money, and clothes, stored safely with a trusted friend or family member.

Stay tech-safe: consider changing passwords regularly and turning off location settings on devices and apps.

If you're worried that someone you know is being abused in their relationship and don't know what to do, call our anonymous phoneline for advice and support on 0300 140 0061.
