“The Mind and Body Are Not the Self”

Let me explain the relationship between the mind, the body, and what we call the human self.

At first glance, the mind and body appear to be the human being itself. However, this is not actually the case. Rather, they are tools—means that a person uses to live and function in this world.

From a philosophical perspective, the mind and body are inseparable adjuncts of life that are necessary for maintaining and continuing the survival and daily existence of an individual organism. Therefore, the mind and body are not the person—the self—and even more so, they are not the true essence of the self.—Nakamura Tempu, founder of Shin-shin-toitsu-ho

The goal of Shin-shin-toitsu-ho is to find our genuine self: a formless energy that’s infinite, eternal, and one with the universe. Despite its name, the ultimate objective of Shin-shin-toitsu-ho isn’t merely to unify mind and body, and it shouldn’t result in attachment to these impermanent tools. Instead, while it helps us to use those tools with great effectiveness in life, in the end it transcends them to get in touch with the part of us that’s never ending and beyond fear or suffering.—H.
