We break down barriers to reconnect people with art, culture and creativity. Every kind of barrier: economic, geographical, societal, emotional. Since 1977, we’ve collaborated with communities and artists to create and explore art of all kinds. We make sure our work is inclusive and relevant by listening to what communities need. We stand up for people who are underrepresented in the arts. We see talent where it has been overlooked and undervalued. Our work is often disruptive and always empowering. We give you the chance to be creative, to change art and culture in your city and beyond. Anywhere can be your studio, your gallery, your stage. At City Arts, we believe you are an artist. 🐷🎭 What a fantastic time we had in Clipstone this October half-term!

It was great to work with Open Doors - Newark and Sherwood to bring puppetry and creative workshops to Clipstone Village Hall.

Last week, award-winning company Noisy Oyster performed The Three Billy Pigs for local audiences. Both performances were followed by brilliant puppet-making workshops led by Bryony McCombie Smith and Grace Calloway. ✂️🎨

We are working with Open Doors - Newark and Sherwood to bring two free, family-friendly, puppet shows to Clipstone this October! Each show is followed by a hands-on creative workshop.

A look back at this summer’s Hoopla! festivals in St Ann’s, Hyson Green, Aspley and Bulwell! 🎭🎨🎶

Hoopla! brings free, high-quality creative experiences for children aged 0–4 into their local parks. With performance, music, making and play, we want young children to have the chance to experience the arts from their earliest years, while removing barriers like cost, travel and unfamiliar venues.

Thank you to everyone who joined us. It was wonderful to see children and families playing, creating and enjoying new experiences together.

✨ This year’s Hoopla! artists: HandMade Theatre, Makers of Imaginary Worlds & Turned On Its Head, Bulwell Toy Library, Charlotte Orchard, Amelia Daiz, Lauren Nicole Whitter, Tatenda Chitsama, Pop-Up Printmaking and Sarah Manton.

A big thank you to our funders and supporters Small Steps Big Changes, My Nottingham, the Angela Gallagher Memorial Fund and Challenge Nottingham, who made this year’s festivals possible.

🙌 Volunteer with City Arts!

We’re looking for friendly, welcoming volunteers to support our weekly Get Creative arts and crafts sessions for disabled adults.

🎨 Help participants make artwork and get involved in activities
📅 Tuesday mornings, 10am–1pm
📍 Broadway Cinema, Nottingham
🤝 We’re looking for people who can make an ongoing commitment

You’ll need to be 18+ and live or work locally. A DBS check is required, and City Arts can reimburse the cost if you need to get one.

Call for Artists — apply before the 14th Aug

We are commissioning three Black and Global Majority women identifying artists based in the East Midlands to create their own work based on the theme of Radical Joy.

We want to know what 'Radical Joy' means to you! This piece can be theatre, spoken word, movement, music, live art and more.

£1,200 commission fee. A new piece, up to 20 minutes. Showcased this October.

Hoopla! is a fun, FREE, family friendly, outdoor mini-festival for ages 0-4. Enjoy puppetry, art, music, play, and exploration. 🎭🌳🎵

Featuring:

✨ Sensory Play Installation with Makers of Imaginary Worlds 🚩

On Sunday 9th August, Wollaton Hall will be full of music, movement, workshops, singing, rhythm, colour and connection.

There’ll be so much to join in with - drumming, dance, Capoeira Angola, Baye Fall singing and chanting from West Africa, an Afro-Colombian Bullerengue circle, hula hooping, arts and crafts, family activities, Rainbow Stripes for little ones, and a sensory area for babies and children.

You can dance, sing, make, drum, play, rest, watch, wander, or just be.

Last year someone called us “a little WOMAD”, and honestly, we’ll take that. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Bring your people, bring a picnic, bring your curious self.
