When George was born almost nine years ago, he was ambulanced straight to the Neonatal Unit at Queen's Medical Centre after it became clear he had multiple serious health conditions, including Tracheo-Oesophageal Fistula (TOF) and Oesophageal Atresia (OA). One in every 3,500 babies is born with these rare congenital conditions affecting the food pipe and airways.
George's parents were told the devastating news that he had just a 50/50 chance of survival, and waited anxiously as he underwent a six-hour operation at just 13 hours old.
George spent the first month of his life in the Neonatal Unit, and has undergone 30 operations to date.
Yesterday, George returned to the Queen's Medical Centre to be reunited with some of the medical staff who cared for him, and to officially open the training and education room on the new Neonatal Unit.
The space was funded thanks to George's family and friends, who came together to form 'Super George's Army' and raise over ÂŁ45,000 to fund the new room, as part of our Big Appeal. From abseils and skydives, to a dragon boat race and a ball which raised ÂŁ17,000 in one night, Super George's Army have done some incredible things to raise money for the new room. George has even got involved himself running the Robin Hood Mini Marathon with his parents, and getting his whole school involved with a sponsored fitness day.
Mum Sophie said: "During our time on the Neonatal Unit we were taught how to do so many things - CPR, stoma care, how to manage a feeding tube and a tracheostomy - but there wasn't a special room for this, it was all done in staff rooms, on the ward, or in any spare room available.
"We're so proud to see George officially open the new training and education room, where parents and families, as well as Neonatal staff, can be trained in all the complex ways their baby might need caring for, in hospital and at home.
"We will never be able to express enough our heartfelt gratitude and thanks to every single consultant, doctor, nurse and all the staff who have cared for George over the years. Mr Davies will forever be our hero, and it's amazing to see George standing by his side, strong, healthy and well - thanks to his incredible life-saving surgery when he was just born."
