What is anxiety?

Anxiety is something most of us experience at some point in our lives. It can show up as worry, fear, racing thoughts, a feeling of dread, or even physical symptoms like a pounding heart or tense muscles.

Sometimes anxiety is a natural response to stress or uncertainty. But when those feelings become overwhelming, persistent, or start affecting daily life, it may be time to seek support.

Understanding anxiety is often the first step towards managing it.

If anxiety has been taking up more space in your life than you’d like, you don’t have to carry it alone. 💙

Ever notice how you become a certain version of yourself around other people?

Maybe you're quieter.
More vigilant.
The one who keeps things steady.

Most men learn these roles somewhere - in family, at school, among friends, or in other groups. Over time, certain ways of being can start to feel automatic. You learn what's okay to say, what gets noticed, and what is better kept to yourself.

The challenge is that these patterns don't always stay in the past.

Sometimes they follow us into adulthood, shaping our relationships, our sense of self, and how comfortable we feel asking for support when we need it.

If any of this sounds familiar, you're not alone.

Recently, NCS was invited to take part in a podcast discussion hosted by the BACP and the Centre for Mental Health.

The conversation explored mental health within our communities, looking at the ways that race and poverty can impact mental wellbeing, and how counselling and therapy services can respond to better support those who need them.

We're grateful to have contributed to such an important discussion and to share insights from our work supporting people across Nottinghamshire.

Pride Month is a celebration of identity, authenticity, and community 🏳️‍🌈

It is also a reminder that everyone deserves to feel safe, accepted, and supported for who they are.

For many LGBTQ+ people, the journey to being their authentic self can come with unique challenges, which is why inclusive spaces and access to support matter so much.

At Nottingham Counselling Service, we believe that everyone deserves a space where they can be heard without judgement and valued exactly as they are.

This June, we're celebrating the diversity, strength, and resilience of LGBTQ+ communities, while continuing to advocate for understanding, acceptance, and wellbeing.

Happy Pride Month 🏳️‍🌈

Exam season can feel overwhelming for many students at this time of year.

We wish our luck to students at University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University over the course of the next few weeks, as well as A-Level and GCSE students.

Long revision hours, deadlines, pressure to succeed, and uncertainty about the future can all take a toll on your mental health. During this time, it’s important to remember that your wellbeing matters just as much as your grades.

Taking breaks, getting enough sleep, eating regularly, staying connected with friends, and asking for support when you need it are all essential parts of looking after yourself during exam season

Our resources are here to support students through the pressures of university life and help you prioritise your mental wellbeing during challenging times.

Self-refer today at nottinghamcounsellingcentre.org.uk if you feel you need support during your time at University.

Many men grow up being taught to hide how they feel.

Over time, that can make it difficult to open up, ask for help, or even recognise when something is wrong in the first place.

Mental health struggles do not make somebody weak. Being honest about how you’re feeling takes courage.

This Mental Health Awareness Week, we want to encourage more open conversations around men’s mental health, without judgement or pressure.

You are allowed to talk about it 💙

Mental Health Awareness Week can sometimes feel full of statistics, advice, and reminders to “look after yourself” but the reality is that mental health is personal and often much quieter than people realise.

Sometimes it looks like feeling constantly overwhelmed by small things.

Sometimes it is struggling to switch your mind off at night.

Sometimes it is feeling disconnected from yourself, exhausted from trying to cope, or pretending you are okay because you don't want to burden anyone else.

Everybody has mental health, just like everybody has physical health, and it can change over time depending on what we are carrying.

This week is not about having all the answers or suddenly feeling positive.

It is simply a reminder that your thoughts, feelings, and wellbeing matter too.

And if things have been feeling heavy lately, you do not have to navigate that alone!

“I’ve handled it this long, I can probably just keep going.”

Just because you can keep going doesn’t always mean you have to do it alone.

A lot of people sit with things quietly for a long time. They get used to carrying it, pushing through, and telling themselves it’s not serious enough to talk about yet.

But support doesn’t only matter when things reach a breaking point.

Sometimes it’s about having somewhere to talk things through before it gets there. Somewhere that helps you make sense of what you’ve been holding onto on your own.

You don’t have to wait until it feels worse to take it seriously.
