Itโ€™s Friday - and a good reminder that co-parenting does not have to be perfect.

For many separated parents, weekends can mean handovers, changing routines and more communication than usual.

The goal is not perfection. It is having the right support, the right tools and a child-focused way forward.

Trusted parenting programmes can help separated parents communicate better, reduce conflict and keep children at the centre.

Co-parenting is not about changing your ex.

It is about choosing how you respond, how you communicate and how you show up for your children.

You may not be able to control the other parentโ€™s behaviour, but you can work towards becoming calmer, clearer and more child-focused in your own approach.

That shift can help reduce conflict, create greater consistency and give children the reassurance that they remain loved and supported by both parents.

SPPD helps separated parents find trusted parenting programmes designed to support that journey.

Introducing The Freedom Care Separated Parents Information Programme (SPIP), now listed on SPPD. Freedom Care Group

Delivered by Freedom Care Group, the programme supports separated parents to move from conflict towards healthier, child-focused co-parenting.

Using a relationship-first and trauma-informed approach, SPIP helps parents understand how separation and parental conflict can affect children emotionally and behaviourally. It also supports parents to reflect on patterns of interaction, develop self-regulation skills and communicate more constructively, including in high-conflict situations.

The programme is delivered by experienced social workers and family practitioners, with particular experience supporting families affected by autism, learning disabilities, mental health needs and ADHD.

It can also be combined with further family coaching and life story work, depending on the familyโ€™s needs.

When families separate, parenting support should not be seen as a last resort.

It can be a positive, practical step that helps parents reduce conflict, communicate more effectively and keep their childrenโ€™s needs at the centre of decisions.

The right support can help parents focus on what matters most: their childrenโ€™s wellbeing, stability and sense of security.

SPPD helps parents and professionals find trusted, quality-assured separated parenting programmes across England and Wales.

Introducing the Our Kids First Wohl Separated Parenting Programme, listed on SPPD.

The Wohl Separated Parenting Programme is a structured four-session course for parents following separation.

The programme combines practical tools with emotional insight, supporting parents to manage conflict constructively, improve communication and stay focused on their childrenโ€™s needs during and after family breakdown.

The course covers practical communication skills for high-conflict situations, including BIFF and structured โ€œIโ€ statements, alongside strategies for consistent, child-centred parenting across two homes.

Parents attending the course are supported to consider the emotional impact of separation, childrenโ€™s developmental needs, and how to promote greater stability and emotional security for children.

Yesterday we attended the Children Children Children conference in Devon, held at the beautiful Dartington Hall.

The conference brought together professionals from across the sector for a day of practical learning, discussion and fresh thinking focused on childrenโ€™s needs, rights and lived experiences.

At SPPD, we are committed to ensuring that children remain at the heart of conversations about separation and co-parenting. It was valuable to hear new perspectives, share ideas and learn from others working to improve outcomes for children and families.

Thank you to the organisers and speakers for an insightful and thought-provoking day.

Family proceedings can feel overwhelming, but preparation matters.

In Part 2 of our blog series, looks at why narrowing the dispute is so important.

Before asking the court to make a decision, it helps to be clear on:

โ€ข what is agreed
โ€ข what is still in dispute
โ€ข what evidence supports your position
โ€ข what outcome you are asking for

In children cases, this means focusing on the childโ€™s welfare, not blame.

In financial remedy cases, it means making sure the numbers are clear, realistic and properly evidenced.

The key question is this: If a judge had ten minutes to understand your case, would they know what you want, why you want it, and what evidence supports it?
