🦊🧡
Another beautiful video from last week just after the tragedy with Binky and her cub where 4/5 cubs became one. 😢 It is not a sad video though—don’t worry!

There are all all kinds of reasons why cubs do not make it—in nature, not all babies are meant to survive which is why there are quite a few in a litter.

They are safe underground for 4 weeks but not all will make it out.

When cubs start to emerge from the den, they are extremely vulnerable-they have no sense of fear and are at risk from predators and other dangers. It is often at this point that a vixen will move her cubs to another den—this is another very risky stage where things often go wrong.

Also at this time, any weak, ill or disabled cubs will become more obvious and ‘survival of the fittest’ comes into the equation. It’s harsh but it’s reality.

After that, the perils continue and most cubs will not make their first birthday.

The average life of an urban fox is just 18 months—this is due mainly to traffic, illness and mange. ❤️‍🩹

But this is nature—we cannot control it—and with the negatives there are always the positives that we must celebrate!

🦊 Yesterday marked 5 years since the first day I went to the cemetery to try to get on top of the terrible mange situation that had been going on for years.

On that very first day I was led to a den where a vixen had been seen with awful mange. I approached and she dashed out dropping tiny cubs who fell off her into the undergrowth as she had been nursing them. I retreated quickly to allow her to take them back into the den then hoped with all my heart she would not to be too scared to take some food with mange medication.

She was so very nervous and it was touch and go but the planets were aligned that day! I kept my distance but she kept meeting my eye and she ate the food. What a feeling it was! It not only saved her life but also her cubs and subsequently all the generations of foxes there since!

I called her Elizabeth after Elizabeth Siddal whose grave she was near.

I know every fox there and all their life stories! They all have names and birthdates and I have treated all of them for one thing or another-it’s never ending and consumes all my spare time but is a privilege. 🧡

Binky, is four years old and the one who I have currently known longest, since she was a cub. Her mum died 3 years ago and she took over the job as boss! She has had a few health issues lately which I have treated her for and a week and a half ago, gave birth to her 4th litter of cubs.

We celebrated yesterday by me giving her the final dose of antibiotics and a lovely walk together and chill out session in the sunshine. She took a break from her cubs and I took a break from, well, everything! And it was warm enough for us both to sit on the ground! 😅 The bond we have is something special but she is a wild animal as they all are, so I never take that for granted.

I saw all the others too of course but Binky decided yesterday was for me and her only! 🥰

It was a beautiful day! 🧡🦊🧡

🦊 Poor Binky AGAIN! 🦊

I had only just finished treating her for lungworm when she gave birth to cubs last weekend then on Wednesday she appeared with a big swelling on her chin/throat. 😫

I could not tell if it was an abscess either on the outside or the inside of her mouth/throat or something more serious, for example, something stuck in her throat. She was having slight difficulty swallowing but seemed to be able to eat.

Honestly, it’s never ending ailments and injuries…and so many worries with Binky and co!

I decided to give daily antibiotics and manuka honey for healing and hope that it wasn’t something more serious and although I don’t want to speak too soon, the swelling seems to have gone down….such a relief! 🧡🦊🧡

🦊 Amber is fine! 🙌🙌🙌

I was so worried about her as she was due to give birth on Saturday but on Friday was limping on her front leg and looking very slow and sorry for herself.

I had also recently treated her for suspected mange which appeared out of nowhere.

I didn’t see her all weekend but yesterday she came dashing to see me obviously having given birth! She was no longer limping! She didn’t stay long-nor did Binky-as they are both feeding new born cubs but just long enough to have a few snacks and allow me to check on them.

They are both looking great! 🧡

🦊 Queen Binky gave birth on International Women’s Day (or more than likely last night!) 🧡

She popped out to find me to let me know but got in a bit of a flap when there were too many people around. For the first time since I’ve known her, ( this is her fourth litter in her four years) she let me see her den on the very first day-she is very clever and usually extremely secretive until she decides it’s safe.

It is normal for foxes to be very protective over their dens and they often use lots of distraction techniques so humans don’t see the exact location.

They often move them to another den too-sometimes a few times from den to den. They always have back-up plans!

She had a few peanuts and bits but was keen to dash back to her cubs. As this is her 4th litter-it really shows in her teats, bless her! 😁

I haven’t seen Amber at all but she was due yesterday. It’s a bit worrying as she was limping on Friday and was very sorry for herself. I hope she’s ok 🧡

I've just seen this unbelievably ridiculous no-feeding sign on twitter, absolutely disgraceful from Brent Council. 5 YEARS IN PRISON? UNLIMITED FINE? Looks like it was Mayor Ryan Hack that reviewed and signed it off, feel free to let him know your thoughts...

Aside from the fact that feeding our hungry wildlife is not (and must not be considered) a crime, the choice of languages for translations looks completely racist to me; scapegoating and blaming specific cultures and nationalities for committing 'crimes against our streets'. Outrageous.

Also I recently heard about a kind elderly lady resident being falsely accused of "breaking the law" while with a Wildlife Rescuer trying to catch an injured bird in Kilburn. She was terrified as enforcement officers ran up to her, with no ID on display, sporting face-coverings. She described them as 'intimidating ICE agents', demanding she give them her details as they were going to issue her a fine. Thankfully she knew better and pointed out that as she had done nothing wrong, they had no proof nor grounds to issue a fine, and walked away.

If we allow our councils to put up threatening signs like this, to diminish what little compassion we have left in our society. This must be stopped, those signs have to go.

🦊 Binky is now completely recovered from her recent brush with lungworm which is potentially deadly without treatment.

She finished her 9 days of daily treatment on Tuesday (administered in Swiss roll!) and is looking and acting more like her usual lovely self. Just in the nick of time as she will be giving birth in a week or two!

Thank you to all her well-wishers! 🧡

Poor Binky hobbling along as fast as she can in her under the weather condition to get her lungworm medication in the magical SWISS ROLL! 🦊🧡

18/02/2026

🦊 Poor old Binky has been slightly off colour recently and I thought it might be connected to the fact that she just had her 4th mating season, is coming up to 4 years old and is 4 weeks into her 4th pregnancy!

Yesterday though, she was coughing so I am treating her for lungworm as a precaution. She is very pleased about this because I gave her the medication in her favourite Swiss roll. Her face lit up! 😁

Of course the other 8 all wanted some too and as I will be treating her daily for the next week or so, I will need to buy about 50 Swiss rolls! 😅🦊
