In 2026, nobody should have to face financial hardship. The UK Government could make a difference for hundreds of thousands of older people by committing to a take-up strategy that makes sure we all receive the financial support we’re eligible for.

Since 1863, Independent Age has stood with older people. In 2026, we look different, but our purpose remains: Let’s end financial hardship in later life.

We’re excited to announce a new chapter for the charity; an ambitious new strategy for 2027-30, a bold new look and a new tagline to unite us all in our goal to tackle pensioner poverty.

Nearly 2 million older people live in poverty in the UK, with millions more hovering on the brink. Every week, we hear from people in later life making desperate choices to manage, from sleeping in cold homes to skipping meals. The challenges of financial hardship are familiar for too many in later life, but poverty is not inevitable.

Our work is needed more than ever but together we can make a difference. Let’s end financial hardship in later life.

Independent Age Chief Executive Joanna Elson was on BBC Radio 5 live last week explaining the reality of high water bills for many older people.

We are calling for an end to the postcode lottery that means how much you pay for water, and the support you get when you're struggling with your bill, depends on where you live.

We want the UK Government to introduce a single social tariff in England and Wales so that that people on a low income receive consistent and fair support with their water bills.

Today, we're the only national charity solely dedicated to ending financial hardship in later life. From our free Helpline with expert advisers to our grants programme supporting hundreds of local charities, every day we are highlighting the issues experienced by older people facing financial hardship and campaigning for change.

On this International Day of Older Persons, we're looking ahead to an exciting new chapter.

This morning, our Director of Policy and Influencing Morgan Vine joined BBC Breakfast to respond to the Prime Minister's proposed move to a double lock State Pension.

At Independent Age, we hear every day from older people struggling to make ends meet. They cannot afford to lose a penny. With any changes, we must ensure older people have the income they need to live well.

Our recent research found that too many older people are missing out on social security entitlements like Pension Credit, Housing Benefit, and Council Tax Reduction. We need to ensure everyone who qualifies receives the money they are entitled to.

We also hope to see the Pensions Commission work together with the UK Government to determine what an adequate income looks like for people in later life, what role the State Pension plays in this and how we can ensure that we can all live well as we age. Nobody should face financial hardship in later life.
