Walkabout Foundation

Walkabout Foundation Non-profit that provides wheelchairs and rehabilitation to people in need and funds SCI research.

We work to improve the quality of life of people with disabilities through a three pronged approach: research, wheelchair distribution and rehabilitation. We believe that this model tackles the issue from all angles, allowing us to find both short and long term solutions to finding a cure for paralysis.

Our vision for the Dominican Republic is about building something that will last.

The new Centre will bring wheelchair provision, custom fitting, rehabilitation, repairs and follow-up care together in one place, so people with mobility disabilities can continue to receive support they need over time ♿️

At the heart of this vision is a locally led programme, with the people, skills and resources in place to support children, adults and their families for years to come.

There’s still a lot ahead, but we’re excited about what this new chapter will make possible 💙

In 2018, we opened our Centre in Kenya with a simple goal: to restore mobility for people with disabilities.

Today, the Centre provides around 2,000 wheelchairs each year, alongside repairs, follow-up support, rehabilitation and community outreach.

It has enabled us to hire a dedicated local team of 17 employees, five of whom are wheelchair users and former beneficiaries.

Over the past eight years, Kenya has shown us what's possible. As we look to the future, we're taking those lessons and applying them to our vision for the Dominican Republic.

Every community is different, but our goal remains the same: to create a sustainable, locally led programme that provides long-term support 💙

Meet Leo, a 9-year-old boy from the Dominican Republic 🇩🇴

When we first met, he had outgrown his old wheelchair, making it difficult for him to move around comfortably.

We provided Leo with a properly fitted paediatric wheelchair, giving him the support he needs.

Leo's story is just one example of why access to appropriate mobility equipment is so important across the region.

As we work towards establishing Walkabout Foundation República Dominicana, our vision is to create a permanent hub providing wheelchair assembly, repairs, rehabilitation and community outreach, helping to expand access to mobility support across the Dominican Republic, neighbouring Haiti and the wider Caribbean.

Every wheelchair has the power to transform a life, and we're excited about the opportunity to help more children and families in the years ahead 💙

Our vision for the Dominican Republic begins in Dajabón, a town on the country's north-west border with Ouanaminthe, Haiti.

The region is home to a significant refugee population and faces a growing need for mobility equipment. It’s also home to the CODEVI Free Zone, providing access to manufacturing facilities and infrastructure that will help support the long-term growth of our programme.

By establishing our Centre here, we are laying the foundations for a regional hub that will allow us to serve the Dominican Republic, while expanding our reach across the Caribbean and Latin America, while continuing to support Haiti.

This is where our next chapter begins 💙

Every smile tells a story 💙

Behind every wheelchair delivered, there’s a person with dreams, ambitions and places they want to go.

For years, we've been working alongside local partners across the Dominican Republic to help children and adults regain mobility and reconnect with their communities.

We're excited for what comes next as we work towards establishing Walkabout Foundation República Dominicana.

This is only the beginning.

The Dominican Republic has always held a special place in our story 🇩🇴

As the home of our co-founders' family, this programme is especially meaningful.

Now, we're working towards establishing Walkabout Foundation República Dominicana in Dajabón.
Inspired by the success of our Kenya Centre, our vision is to create a sustainable, locally led programme that brings together wheelchair assembly, fitting, repairs, rehabilitation and community outreach, serving the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Latin America and the Caribbean.

This is about more than just opening a new Centre. It's about creating a sustainable model that will transform lives across the region for years to come.

Stay tuned as we continue to share our vision 💙

Meet Emilian, a little boy from the Dominican Republic 💙

Emilian has cerebral palsy. Before receiving his first wheelchair, his mum relied on a stroller to take him everywhere.

Today, Emilian has a wheelchair that gives him the support he needs to explore the world around him. His mum was able to enrol him in school and return to work as a physiotherapist.

Emilian's story is one of many that highlights the importance of accessible mobility equipment and rehabilitation.

As we prepare to set up a Centre in the Dominican Republic, our vision is to establish a permanent, locally led hub providing wheelchair assembly, fitting, repairs and rehabilitation, so more children and families can access the support they need.

A new chapter begins 🌎

Our journey in the Dominican Republic began in 2010 with our first regional distribution.

Since then, we’ve provided over 920 wheelchairs together with our local partners, restoring mobility to adults and children in need across the country 🇩🇴

Now, we’re looking ahead.

We are in the early stages of establishing a new Centre in the Dominican Republic – a hub that will serve communities across the Caribbean and Latin America, as well as neighbouring Haiti.

Inspired by the success of our Kenya Centre, the vision is to create a sustainable programme that brings together wheelchair assembly, fitting, repairs, rehabilitation and community outreach.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing more about our vision.

We’re excited to take you on this journey with us 💙
