🥤 It is fascinating watching butterflies feed. Using a straw like tongue called a proboscis they drink liquids (nectar, rotting fruit juice or even dung!)
🌸This female large white (Pieris brassicae) butterfly is enjoying the verbena nectar here.
🕵️♀️ You can tell the difference between large and small whites from the colour pattern on the wing tips of the upper side of the forewing- the former has a black band extending a long way down the outer edge and the latter is less pronounced and doesn’t extend as far.
📈You can help ‘take nature’s pulse’ by taking part in the Big Butterfly Count until this Sunday!
