Introducing: Spear πŸ™Œ

Today, we’re excited to share that we’re changing our name to Spear. You may have known us as Resurgo, but as the Spear Programme has become the heart of what we do, we’re bringing our name into line with our mission.

While our name is changing, our vision remains exactly the same: for every young person in the UK, regardless of their background, to fulfil their unique potential and contribute to society.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing more about our vision, our passion, and what this new chapter means - we’d love you to be part of it.

We won't be posting on this account anymore, but you can find us on Instagram and LinkedIn: http://linkedin.com/company/spear-org πŸ‘‹

πŸ’¬ "My name is Kaysha. Before Spear, I was in a really dark place. I was actually referred to Spear by a mental health professional, and she told me that this space would help me socialise with people and get a job. But I never really expected this to help me this much.

πŸ’¬ I started to talk to people. I got to know people. My plan really was to not talk to anyone. I didn't want to make friends. But coming to Spear, I've met a lot of encouraging people. I've had people encourage me. [My coach] taught me a lot of things that I didn't know about myself. She said that I was enthusiastic and encouraging and all these other things that I never really saw in myself.

πŸ’¬ It just made me want to come to Spear every single day. And when I would look in the mirror, I would see someone that's able to do something."

For some of our Spear trainees, today is their first day of the programme. What's it like starting Spear? La'Seye shares how she felt and what advice she'd give new Spear trainees.

πŸ’¬"My name is Zahra, and I'm going to tell you a bit about my journey. Before spear, I was applying to jobs. I was getting rejection after rejection, much like the experience of my peers, and the experience felt very frustrating because I wasn't getting any feedback, and I just felt stuck in the same place. I'd look to my friends, I'd see them, you know, moving on forward with their life, going on holidays, and I couldn't join and I couldn't move past like the same space I was in. And I felt guilt and shame for feeling so bitter about it, and I just felt really frustrated and isolated.

πŸ’¬ I applied to Spear a while back, and I went down and realised why I applied, because I felt really pushed out my comfort zone in terms of communication, presentations, company visit, interviews. We're constantly gently pushed, but it was a great experience, and I really learned from it.

πŸ’¬ I really like the growth that I found in myself and in my peers as well, and the space that we created was just so supportive that I just came every time. And that's something that I want to carry on forward with me. The space is so inspiring, and I've been interested in doing something creative. So I want to do something for people that are underrepresented in the creative industry, just like me, because I find it really hard to break into it."

Zahra (not pictured) recently completed the Spear Programme in Spear Hammersmith & Fulham. We're cheering you on, Zahra! πŸ’ͺ

The Spear Programme is about more than CVs and interviews.

We help you build a growth mindset, the kind that sets you up for long-term success πŸ’ͺ

❌ Fixed mindset: avoids challenges, gives up easily, ignores feedback
βœ… Growth mindset: embraces challenges, keeps going through setbacks, learns and grows

πŸ’¬ "Before Spear, as a child, I grew up in an environment where my voice never really mattered, and on top of that, I struggled with my speech a lot. I had a stutter, and I was autistic as well, so my brain is hardwired differently to everyone else's around me. So as a child, I felt quite isolated, and it spread through all my teenage years. And then I failed some of my GCSEs, so I did a B Tech course, but I had to drop out because of my mental health. And then I just, I lost all my motivation. I didn't want to do anything else. That was it. I stayed at home.

πŸ’¬ And then fast forward to April of this year. I had my little boy, and kind of decided that that was it, that something needed to change, because I didn't want my son to grow up thinking that if he fails school or if he does struggle, that that's it, and he's never going to go anywhere. And then I was told about Spear. So I was like, Okay, I'll give it a go.

πŸ’¬ During Spear, I've been taught that my voice does matter, and the fact that my brain doesn't work the same as everyone else's is an asset, in a sense, because it made everyone else look at a problem from a different perspective, as opposed to in a straight line. And then after Spear, I'm going to find a law apprenticeship and do a diploma to go into family law so that I can help children who feel like I did, to know that there's someone out there who'll fight for them."

Tamika recently finished the Spear Programme in Preston. Thank you for sharing your powerful story with us, Tamika! πŸ™Œ

πŸ’¬ "Before Spear, I went through a tough time with my mental health, where it was just debilitating, where I just could not get out of my head. There were times that I would count my days and say, like, when will this truly end? Until there was this glimpse of hope - a friend of mine texting me on WhatsApp and saying, 'What about just going to the job centre?'

πŸ’¬ I went to the job centre, and my job coach [...] told me that Spear would help me. The step-by-step process of knowing what to do and having that confidence of finally having this motivation has really helped me.

πŸ’¬ The first day was nerve-wracking, for sure. But I broke down my walls. I tried to push myself more. I tried to push myself into speaking more confidently. That has really helped me to grow me into an individual and it has helped me to get a job interview. Honestly, I'm so proud, I'm so blessed to have this opportunity."

We're so proud of all our Spear trainees and the progress they've made this year. Trainees like Amira, who recently completed the Spear Programme in Kennington.
