Meet our marketplace stallholders at this year’s Autumn Fayre! Taking place on on Saturday the 17th of October from 10am to 4pm at Vine Road Rec, the Fayre will host local, independent and sustainable businesses in the large marquee, as well as the bowling green. Page through the slides to get to know all our fabulous businesses selling a range of products from handmade soaps to knitwear, art to pet accessories - perhaps the perfect gift is waiting for you at the Fayre!

It was lovely to welcome a group of young adults on our bird walk over the weekend, led by expert young naturalists Şeniz Mustafa and Akash 🌿. Many of the participants were visiting the Common for the first time, or had passed through on the way to the Wetland Centre but never had a chance to explore it properly. We saw and/or heard many birds including Jays and Jackdaws, Great and Blue T**s, Woodpeckers and a Nuthatch. Then someone heard a Goldcrest calling, and eventually everyone got good views. Later we saw a Great Spotted Woodpecker perched high in the trees. A male Kestrel on Mill Hill was the star attraction, and at the end of the walk, a Green Woodpecker made a fleeting appearance right on cue. We’ve got a wide range of activities for all ages at our Autumn Fayre on 17th October! Choose from our plant and fungi walks, our nature conservation walks or try the free sensory walk and wild workout. Join our tote bag decorating, pumpkin craft and willow weaving workshop sessions, or try your hand at squeezing apples to make fresh juice! Botanist Roy Vickery will return this year to our Autumn Fayre to lead his popular short plant walks again. The Wonderful Weeds walk at 11am is about the uses and folklore of wild plants. This walk is suitable for all ages. In the afternoon, he will be leading the Healing Hedgerows walk from 14:30pm. Aimed for an audience of older teens and adults, he will be talking about medicinal and other uses of hedgerow plants. On this walk, we imagine ourselves to be back in the 1920s, before the NHS and when people used wild plants for medicine, food, pastimes and much more. As part of our focus on traditional conservation techniques, we trained our group of volunteers to use scythes at this week’s conservation volunteering session in the Orchard. Everyone was surprised at how fast we worked with only a handful of scythes - we finished early because we wanted to keep some of the grass long! Compared to modern alternatives such as tractor mowing or strimming, scything offers a sustainable, quiet and wildlife-friendly technique of grassland management and helps to create diverse habitats.

Our very popular fungi walks with botanist Dr Mark Spencer will take place again at this year’s Autumn Fayre! Join us on a stroll across our woodland and grassland and discover the many species of fungi growing on Barnes Common. Wrap up, put on some sturdy shoes and join us for a morning or an afternoon event, suitable for all ages. Book now as places are limited and this event sells out every year.
This walk is a part of our very popular Autumn Fayre. Come and help us press some apples, marvel at our nature table, decorate a pumpkin with your family and sample our cakes and drinks, or wood fired pizza from The Dough Shack!

Thank you to everyone who came to our skate park taster and drop in Q&A on Monday, it was great to see so much support for the project and have a chat about the details of the plans. Thank you to CANVAS | Skateparks & Spaces who created the preliminary designs working closely with the community. It was also great to have members of the Skatepark working group, as well representatives from the Barnes Community Association and our local councillor, Anton McNulty-Howard. We were delighted to hear that the girls trying the temporary ramps were inspired to visit skate parks in neighbouring boroughs to practice and learn.
