“Cooking is one of Froebel’s Occupations which relates to real life, involves the child in real and practical work, encourages motivation, develops independence and promotes cross-curricular learning,” Chris McCormick, Froebelian methods in a modern world: A case for cooking

Cooking covers all areas of the curriculum, from making and reading recipes, counting, measuring, estimating ingredients and using tools and utensils. 🧑‍🍳

It is an activity that provides young children opportunities to explore and learn about the wider world around them.

Our pamphlet, Cooking with Young Children, offers educators, carers and parents’ practical advice and real-life examples of how to safely cook and nurture a child’s learning through cooking. 🌿

“With the Froebelian approach our learners are engaged but more than that, the impact on learning is far wider,” Jo Giles, Head Teacher at St Andrew’s Primary School

This year, St Andrew’s Primary School in Wales have embedded the Froebelian approach to Year 1 teaching and beyond, having been using the approach in Nursery and Reception.

Staff apply Froebelian principles in their planning and practice, being guided by the children’s interests and first-hand experiences to meet each child where they are and develop their learning based on their own unique needs. 🌿

Here, Jo Giles, Head Teacher at the school shares a little about the school’s Froebelian journey and impact on the children.

You can watch the full film, which features more of the school’s educators, sharing the positive impact of using Froebel’s Occupations and principles.
