We believe all children, irrespective of where they live, have the right to play safely and happily

A visit to Palestine made us realise just how difficult life is for children there. We wanted to do something to help, and just two days after our return to the UK we read a full page article in the Guardian about Playgrounds for Palestine, based in the States, run by the author Susan Abulhawa. When we asked how we could help they said would we consider setting up a UK branch - with some trepidation we agreed, acknowledging 'if not us, then who?' Much, much paperwork later we have now have charitable status and a determination to help in whatever ways we can. We believe all children, irrespective of where they live, have the right to play safely and happily and to be just children.

On we remember that peace means so much more than the absence of violence. It means safety, health, the chance to thrive. It means a childhood of unhindered imagination and a real chance to grow up. We’ve been here and we’ll continue to be here. Children in Palestine deserve to be seen and thrive. As our feeds were filled this week with statements from artists about the merits of speaking out or silence, children in Gaza continued to be killed. They matter. Our work upholds their right to childhood. Thank you to each and every supporter out there who is staying with us and not moving on.

As many of us gather around tonight to watch the World Cup, we remember that in Palestine, playing the beautiful game under occupation can be dangerous for children. Playing is never easy or safe in Palestine, where children have to navigate restrictions on movement, violence, and uncertainty. Children like Naji Al Baba (14), Khalil al Mughrabi (11), Ismael Mohammed Bakr (9), Zakira Ahed Bakr (10), Ahmed Atif Bakr (10), and Mohammed Ramzi Bakr (11) have been killed while playing football in Palestine. Every child has the right to play—and we envision a future where Palestinian children play freely as part of a safe and healthy childhood. (Naji al Baba photographed)
