Reconnecting Cambodia Project

Reconnecting Cambodia Project Imagine not knowing who your parents are or where you came from. The RECONNECTING CAMBODIA (RC) PROJECT is ambitious, unique and never done before.

Helping reunite Cambodian families through DNA testing.
According to my sketchy exit papers, I was born Ly Da MEN. 2025 will be the 50th anniversary of the Khmer Rouge coming to power - the genocidal

regime under Pol Pot that left nearly 2 million of its people (¼ of the population) dead and forced Cambodia back to the stone age. About a million refugees were resettled abroad during three decades of civil war - families like mine were torn apart and relatives simply went missing, with no surviving records to help reconnect or trace them. Today, the social impact on mental health, and poverty (with their associated issues), remains a challenge on a national scale. As an extension of my own search and inspired by a promise to help a 82 year old mother find her missing daughter of the same age, the RC Project was conceived to give new hope to countless people like me across three generations to be reunited with lost family members. The aim is not only to test every family that lost someone, but in doing so, restitch the social fabric of a country that the Khmer Rouge purposefully destroyed. INTERNATIONAL AND CAMBODIAN OPERATIONS - We started out in 2020 as the NGO DNACambodia (www.dnacambodia.com), after I joined forces with Meta Meulenbelt (adoptive mum) and Kari Lemons (adoptive mum and creator of Khmer Cousins Project). We helped set up our sister local charity Khmer Family Charity Organization (www.kfco-dna.org) to undertake Cambodian operations. In 2024 Reconnecting Cambodia UK was set up for the three organisations to operate under the 'Reconnecting Cambodia project'. SUCCESS: among our close matches, we've reunited two siblings and an aunt and nephew both across continents. ACTIVITIES MOVING FORWARD - To date, we are a small team of 3 internationally-based volunteers, with a salaried part-time Cambodian Director. We want to turbocharge development and expansion of the RC Project's core activities, founded on five pillars: Science, Test, Educate, Assist and Restore (STEAR). Happy Birthday to Chanserey Sothea, who has supported the RC Project for five years as our Phnom Penh Representative and who’s also doing a fundraiser for the charity, which is already doing so well, with $510.06 raised!

It’s not too late to support her birthday fundraiser here:

Born in Cambodia and raised in the UK, Chanserey was introduced to our co-founder, Li-Da Kruger, through her uncle, Dayanny So (the artist who collaborated on our logo), and joined the project to support its DNA-led work helping Cambodians search for lost family connections.

Thank you, Chanserey, for your continued support and commitment to the RC Project. We wish you a wonderful year ahead.

Yesterday was National Day of Cambodian Remembrance 🕊️

As we reflect on the lives lost under the Khmer Rouge regime, we are reminded why our work matters — restoring identities, reconnecting families, and helping heal generations affected by loss and separation.

If you or someone you know is searching for lost loved ones, we invite you to reach out and be part of the journey towards remembrance and reconnection. 💙

What an amazing Cambodian soirée with See Beyond Borders last week! 🇰🇭 I'm genuinely impressed by SBB's unique approach of training teachers, not the students to create sustainable impact across Cambodia. Chef Kaneda Pen's mouthwatering feast at his Mama Pen pop-up was absolute perfection. It was wonderful to connect with fellow Cambodia advocates, including the UK Cambodian Student Association. Reconnecting Cambodia can't wait to explore synergies further with this inspiring organisation!

ONLY 3 days left (until 15 May)! If you haven't already, GO visit Hidden in London!

"Stories preserve what time forgets—our memories, connections, and identity", our cofounder says. Each piece of this powerful exhibition Hidden: Photography and Displacement under Khmer Rouge - a long term collaborative project by Charles Fox and Prum Sisaphantha - reflects how memory endures through storytelling and how, to relate to the work of the Reconnecting Cambodia Project, these memories quietly become the threads that reunite families, restore identity, and reconnect communities.
