CHIRP Maritime

CHIRP Maritime CHIRP reviews each report, discusses with the mariner a proposed course of action, and then follows up the report accordingly.

CHIRP Maritime contributes to the enhancement of maritime safety worldwide by providing a totally independent confidential (not anonymous) reporting system for everyone employed or associated with the maritime sector CHIRP Maritime receives reports from mariners of all nationalities on ships of any flag about hazardous incidents or safety issues which the mariner may be unwilling to take up with t

he ship manager or the authorities. Once suitably anonymised, selected reports may, with the mariner's permission, be included in CHIRP Maritime Feedback, a journal that is published on the website www.chirp.co.uk so that safety lessons can be promulgated more widely in the maritime community.

Routine jobs can still go wrong quickly if the planning is weak.

Our Working aloft card helps crews slow the job down, check competence and equipment, confirm rescue arrangements and brief the task properly before anyone leaves the deck. It is practical, short and built for real onboard use.

Read the card, use it before the next job aloft and share any lessons learned confidentially through CHIRP

Working aloft is routine on many vessels, but it is never low risk. This briefing card gives crew a practical guide to planning the job properly, checking competence and equipment, confirming rescue arrangements and asking the right questions before anyone goes aloft. CHIRP is looking for a new Chair to lead its Board of Trustees.

This is an important moment for the charity. With a new strategy in place, CHIRP is focused on breaking down barriers to reporting, building coalitions for system change, supporting better safety cultures, and engaging new and future generations.

We are looking for a collaborative, courageous and strategic Chair who can help guide the charity through its next stage of growth, sustainability and impact.

This is a voluntary, remote role, with expenses paid.

Closing date: 3 June 2026 at 16:00.

Together with a team of international researchers, the International Christian Maritime Association has developed an anonymous survey on seafarers’ experiences in the Strait of Hormuz. Input from seafarers will help the maritime community better understand the situation, learn from it and prepare more effectively for future events of this nature.

Seafarers who have been in the region an any time since Feb 28 are encouraged to take part here:

CHIRP Maritime is proud to support BIMCO’s Fair Seas initiative, which shines a light on the vital role seafarers play in sustaining the global economy. Every day, seafarers enable the movement of goods that underpin our way of life, yet their contribution often goes unseen.

https://www.bimco.org/seafarers

This powerful film highlights the human side of shipping and reinforces the need for fair treatment, safe working conditions, and respect for those at sea. Seafarers are essential to global trade; without them, the world quite simply would not function.

We encourage the maritime community and the wider public to watch, reflect, and support the call for fairer seas for all.

Nuclear Ships Explained: “It’s Basically a Giant Kettle” | Sea Views podcast

How does a nuclear-powered ship actually work? Think of it like a giant kettle. Instead of traditional boilers, nuclear vessels use steam generators to produce heat, creating steam that drives turbines and generates electricity onboard.

The key difference lies in the closed-loop system, where coolant circulates through the reactor, carries heat to the steam generators, and continuously cycles back again.

It’s a simple concept at its core, even if the engineering behind it is highly advanced.

Nuclear Propulsion Explained Simply: “It’s Just a Heat Source” | Sea Views Podcast

What is nuclear propulsion… in the simplest terms? A nuclear reactor is essentially just a heat source. That heat is used to turn water into steam, which then drives turbines for propulsion or powers generators to produce electricity onboard.

While the system itself is highly complex, the core principle is surprisingly simple, and it is exactly how nuclear-powered vessels operate.
