A true Craftivist uses craft as a tool for gentle activism aimed at influencing long-term change. Craftivist Collective was founded in 2009, when after years of marches, signing protests and working on campaigns for large charities, experienced activist Sarah Corbett had begun to doubt the effects of some conventional activism. The time felt right for a different, less aggressive approach. Its app
eal, as a gentle, respectful and more targeted plea for social change was a perfect fit and although as a principle 'Craftivism' already existed, it took no time for Sarah to develop her own unique strand. One focused on putting the contemplative moments spent stitching to work, exploring global issues and using craft for critical thinking, questioning and considered creative activism. After struggling to find any Craftivism groups or projects to join, Sarah started creating her own and documenting them via her blog, 'A lonely Craftivist'. This blog soon became the 'Collective', as budding Craftivists all over the world discovered Sarah’s work and wanted to join in.
5 years on and with now thousands of members Craftivist Collective is thriving. A book release and contributions to many different of publications; 2 TEDx talks; countless workshops, product sales and many successful partnerships with Non Governmental Organisations, art organisations and universities have all helped carry its message to a global audience. Whilst worldwide project exhibitions and high profile collaborations, with the likes of cult jewellers Tatty Devine,V&A and Secret Cinema, have helped extend its reach beyond the normal bounds of activism. Stitch by contemplative stitch Craftivist Collective continues to thread activism through all it does, exposing the world's injustices and always striving to make people question how they can be part of the solution.
