Foster Carers what food stories do you have?
To get you going here is one from earlier ... counting out raisins for the seven-year-old as you try to teach her how much is enough, encouraging her to eat them one at a time, reassuring her that later on there will be dinner and tomorrow morning there will be breakfast, yet still discovering a packet of old biscuits hidden beneath her chest of drawers. Foster children from neglected backgrounds are more likely to have eating disorders than most.

When fostering gets tough, we sometimes lose sight of why we do it. One of our carers told us about this small moment she will remember forever: 'I was eating lunch with my two foster sons whilst out shopping for school uniforms. Out of the blue, my eldest, 11, turned to me and asked nonchalantly, 'are you sure you’re not going to kill me?' I said I was sure. He asked me to 'pinkie swear' on it. As we joined our little fingers, I remembered: 'This is why I'm fostering—so he can be safe.' If you'd like to help keep local children safe too, then call our friendly team on 020 3713 7293 for information about fostering.

We talk about 'attachment' quite frequently in parenting because being able to bond with others is a strong human need. For foster carers, forming relationships with sometimes confused and anxious children is a vital skill you learn in your training—and keep learning with each new experience. This article explains in more detail what it's all about. For information about fostering, call our friendly team on 020 3713 7293.
