Last chance to have your say on proposed CMA requirements.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is consulting on draft requirements that will introduce new obligations for veterinary businesses, including changes around pricing, prescriptions, ongoing medication and client information.

The consultation also includes a proposed waiting room poster encouraging clients to compare prices and consider buying medicines elsewhere.

We're raising our concerns about the messaging, language and design of the proposed poster, which practices will be required to display in their waiting rooms. We’ll be highlighting these concerns in our formal response.

Ruminant Health & Welfare has issued new bluetongue vaccination guidance, which includes advice around using the cascade to import BTV-3 vaccines if a suitable authorised vaccine is not available in Great Britain.

Congratulations to BVA President Rob Williams on being named among the new Fellows of the RCVS - Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Fellowship. We’re also delighted to see BVA President 2023-25, Anna Judson, Welsh Branch President 2019-21, Ifan Lloyd, Vetlife Helpline Manager, Rosie Allister, Northern Ireland Branch President 2023-24, Dr Esther S. and BVA Outstanding Service Award 2026 winner Cat Henstridge (Cat The Vet) recognised among the new Fellows.

The title of RCVS Fellow is the pinnacle of veterinary achievement, recognising outstanding contributions to the profession and helping advance veterinary standards through shared expertise and independent knowledge.

Chair of the RCVS Fellowship Board Niall Connell said, “I am really pleased to see the RCVS Fellowship once again welcoming such a broad and diverse range of veterinary skills and excellence to its ranks.”

*Message from APHA*

The circulating BTV-3 variant in south west England has prompted discussion on social media forums leading to comments that the likelihood of midges biting sheep and therefore BTV-3 infection will be reduced in fully fleeced sheep and that farmers should not shear their sheep to reduce risks.

Given the current temperatures in various parts of the UK, shearing of sheep to alleviate the impacts of heat stress are paramount to meeting the welfare needs of sheep in many areas of the UK at the moment and delaying shearing until October on this basis is not acceptable when heat stress in sheep is a real risk on farm, during transport and at markets.
