This year, Thet Htut Oo turned 6 years old and has now started 1st grade. He enjoys his studies, especially math, English, and reciting poems. With a growing sense of imagination, he often shares that one day he hopes to become a policeman so he can fight for justice. Outside of school, Thet Htut is full of curiosity and energy. He loves watching his neighbors play the traditional cane ball game, often trying it himself with great excitement. His family keeps chickens and ducks, which he enjoys being around, and one of his favorite moments is visiting his uncle, who has pet white rats that Thet Htut adores. When it comes to food, fried fish is his absolute favorite. De Silva foundation is happy to sponsor him for another wonderful year.

We work with children in Kampala’s slum communities, where limited access to education remains one of the biggest barriers keeping families trapped in poverty. That’s why we focus on giving children access to education, because education is the most reliable path out of poverty and a way for them to one day support their families. Through consistent routines and a nurturing environment, children develop essential social skills and positive behaviors that set the foundation for lifelong growth. Just as importantly, this project provides a safe, supervised space where children are protected from the daily dangers of slum life. Here, they are given the chance to learn, grow, and truly thrive.

Rojy is now reading simple Bengali stories and poems with solid pronunciation and growing fluency. She’s starting to form her own small sentences, her handwriting is getting super neat, and she loves reciting rhymes. Her vocabulary is leveling up day by day. De Silva Foundation doesn’t just support children who weren’t born into the right conditions, we also stand with communities who lose everything overnight. That’s exactly what happened after the recent earthquake in Myanmar, and we’re committed to helping families rebuild their lives with dignity. Our support on the ground includes providing nutritious meals to primary school students, strengthening child-protection efforts, distributing shelter and hygiene kits, and installing water tanks. Just as importantly, we’re continuing the rehabilitation of damaged schools and building temporary learning spaces so children can return to their education as quickly as possible.
