🎉 The penultimate session of the Future Leaders of Anaesthesia Programme! What a privilege it has been to celebrate alongside the inaugural cohort.

Over the past 10 months, a diverse group of anaesthetists has shared valuable, uninterrupted time away from bleeps, emails and the day-to-day noise of clinical life.

Perhaps one of the most valuable lessons has been recognising that leadership requires a very different skillset from the clinical expertise anaesthetists know so well. You can’t TIVA your way through every difficult situation, and leadership isn’t about having all the answers - it’s about navigating uncertainty, making good decisions, building allyship, and helping people rise with you.

A huge thank you to Bayes Business School who partnered with us to deliver this fantastic programme, and many congratulations to our graduating class of 2026! ❤️

✨️ This week, we’re coming together to advocate for SAS doctors across the UK and champion the vital contribution they make to anaesthesia and the NHS.

We’re proud to work alongside the Chair of the SAS Committee and first SAS President Elect, Dr Emma Wain, to highlight the barriers SAS doctors face throughout their careers, from access to development and career support to progression and contracts that recognise their experience and expertise.

SAS doctors are a vital part of the NHS workforce, bringing years of clinical experience and expertise.

Their contribution should be recognised through clear career pathways and fair access to Specialist contracts, which recognise senior levels of responsibility and provide an appropriate framework for career progression.

Yet our recent findings highlight unequal access to Specialist contracts across the UK, suggesting that some parts of the UK are making better use of the 2021 SAS contract reforms than others.

We’re advocating for fair and consistent access to Specialist contracts that recognise the skills, experience and contribution SAS doctors bring to the NHS.
