This week, we are celebrating Academy Tutor Shakeil Edwards, who brings a huge amount of energy, creativity and passion to the Academy.

Shakeil is a performer, movement director, producer and creative entrepreneur. He has performed in the West End and beyond, from The Lion King (Disney) and Thriller Live, to stages across the UK and USA.  
 
He runs SKD, an award-winning East London dance crew, and co-founded of Legacy In Motion , who are producing the closing show of Young, Gifted & Black 2026.

Shakeil’s work is driven by creativity, entertainment and creating opportunities for the next generation.
Shakeil will be leading our NEW Hip-Hop Theatre Academy classes, launching this September for ages 8-11 and 12-16.

Hip Hop Theatre is a dynamic creative space where young people explore performance through the music, stories and culture that inspire them today. Combining movement, acting, storytelling and contemporary music, students work collaboratively to create original performances while developing confidence, creativity and their own artistic voice.

This role is an exciting opportunity to support the Head of Technical to ensure the safe and efficient delivery of technical and production activity across our Theatre Peckham and Canada Water Theatre venues.
 
We’re looking for a brilliant person to join our team with proven experience of technical theatre, particularly in fringe or non-commercial theatre, with specific expertise in either lights, sound, or stage 💡🔉🎭

Less than 2 weeks until applications close for the Alex Wheatle Witness Writing Project! 
 
This exciting new programme invites 10 Young Black* creatives aged 17-30 to bring their voice to the stage. Inspired by the legacy of the late, multi-award-winning author Alex Wheatle, this programme is an opportunity to develop your craft, connect with fellow creatives and contribute to the next chapter of Black British storytelling.

If you’ve got something to say, we want to hear it.

Theatre Peckham is thrilled to have joined forces with Manchester Metropolitan University and Words of Colour to launch the project.

Joy Francis, Executive Director of Words of Colour:

“It’s exciting to see Alex’s wide-ranging creative legacy continuing through the Alex Wheatle Witness Writing Project, platforming original storytelling from the next generation of young Black playwrights. Creating opportunities for more inclusive storytelling that reflect our realities in modern Britain was one of Alex’s passions. He always pushed against mainstream media and publishing’s tendency to act as if Black stories aren’t universal. At a time when development opportunities for aspiring writers are thin on the ground, the Witness Project highlights what’s possible.”

Academy Tutor Spotlight - Niyi Akin!

At Theatre Peckham, our Academy students learn from the very best. We’re excited to welcome a new Tutor this year for ‘Acting for Screen’ and ‘Junior Acting Company’: Niyi Akin!
 
Niyi is a London-based actor and filmmaker, trained at The BRIT School and LAMDA. You might recognise him from Spiderman: A Brand New Day, where his scene was an audience favourite!

His screen work also includes multiple seasons of Boarders (BBC Three), Wake Up (Amazon Prime) and Rebel Cheer Squad (Netflix/BBC).

This autumn, Theatre Peckham, Manchester Metropolitan University and Words of Colour are joining forces to launch The Alex Wheatle Witness Writing Project: a new scriptwriting programme for 10 Young Black* creatives aged 17–30 ready to develop their voice, sharpen their storytelling and explore writing for the stage đŸ’«

Whether you’re already writing, have an idea you’ve never shared, or are completely new to creative writing, this programme is open to all. No experience necessary!

Led by acclaimed theatre director Roy Alexander Weise MBE and guest playwright Roy Williams OBE, participants will explore character, dialogue and dramatic storytelling while developing their original script in a supportive and inspiring environment.

The programme culminates in a showcase as part of Theatre Peckham’s Young, Gifted & Black season, where a five-minute extract from each writer’s work will be brought to life by actors from our Young Peckham cohorts and presented with the support of a professional director.

We’re looking for Chaperones for the 2026 Theatre Peckham Festive Show: A-Ladd-In Peckham! 
 
We’re recruiting dedicated and responsible chaperones to support our young performers across November and December.
 
As a chaperone, you will play a vital role in ensuring the safety, wellbeing, and enjoyment of the children throughout rehearsals and performances. This is a rewarding opportunity to be work in a vibrant community venue and help nurture the next generation of talent.
 
Applicants must be reliable, have a warm and supportive nature, and be available across the festive season (November & December 2026).
