"I think volunteering as an act of civic consciousness protects us from becoming indifferent."

That's one of the reasons Huon has volunteered with Thames Reach for more than 13 years.

In this latest volunteer story, Huon reflects on how volunteering helps us stay connected to the realities facing people experiencing homelessness, and why the experience can be just as meaningful for volunteers as it is for the people they support.

Today marks the start of Volunteers’ Week, a chance to celebrate and thank the incredible volunteers who give their time, skills and compassion to support our work across London.

Throughout the week, we'll be sharing stories from some of our amazing volunteers and the difference they make every day. First up is Ash.

After a difficult period of unemployment and a loss of confidence, Ash joined Thames Reach as a volunteer with our Keeping in Touch team. What started as a way to stay active and give back helped him build new skills, regain confidence and take his first steps into the homelessness sector.

Now volunteering alongside working full-time, Ash is preparing to support our Lambeth Street Engagement team as he works towards his goal of becoming an outreach worker.

An Amber Alert remains in place for London this week as the heatwave continues, with the capital recording its highest ever May temperature.

Extreme heat can be dangerous for everyone, but especially for people sleeping rough, who may have little access to shade, water or cool spaces. Heat exhaustion and dehydration can quickly become serious.

Read our blog on how to support people sleeping rough during a heatwave: https://thamesreach.org.uk/2026/05/27/severe-weather/

You can also help by making a donation. Our outreach teams are out on London’s streets every day, supporting people during the heatwave and helping them move away from rough sleeping safely: https://donate.thamesreach.org.uk/donation/~my-donation?_cv=1

What does outreach work really look like on the streets early in the morning, before most people have started their day?

In a new think piece, Thames Reach Chief Executive Bill Tidnam reflects on a suburban outreach shift, the realities teams encounter, and the complex relationship between rough sleeping, anti-social behaviour, drug activity and enforcement.

The piece explores why keeping people safe and helping them move away from the streets requires coordinated support from outreach teams, councils, health services and enforcement agencies alike.

Huge congratulations to Kate and Alice for completing the London Marathon yesterday!

It was brilliant to cheer them on along the route, the energy from the crowds was incredible, and they both did amazingly well.

A huge thank you as well for their incredible efforts fundraising for Thames Reach. Your support will help us continue working to end homelessness for good.

There’s still time to support them and help them reach, and even smash, their fundraising targets:

This International Women's Day, we’re sharing Damilola’s story.

After experiencing mental health difficulties that led her to leave her job, Damilola received support from our Lambeth Individual Placement and Support (IPS) service — helping her rebuild confidence and return to employment.

“I feel like I have a sense of purpose now… it was a dark time of my life, so it’s nice to see that I’m able to get out of it and see brighter horizons.”

Services like IPS Lambeth support people receiving mental health care to find meaningful work, helping them regain stability and independence and playing an important role in preventing homelessness before it begins.
