We are very proud of our Scottish promoter members, who host chamber music events all over the country and bring classical music into the heart of smaller, rural and island communities. 21 of our members have received funds from Chamber Music Scotland to support their work and we are looking forward to another rich programme of concerts from them across 26/27. Congratulations!

Variations String Quartet Challenge; for amateur players between 18 - 40 years of age based in Scotland.

Variations Scotland - who have been running the Variations- Ullapool Summer School chamber music course with the Edinburgh Quartet each July over the past 20 years - have launched this Challenge to motivate more younger amateur string players to come together and play on a regular basis. The Challenge is not open to professional musicians or music conservatory students – it is for amateurs.

Groups are invited to submit recordings (made on a smartphone) of two pieces: any movement of a Haydn string quartet and any other contrasting movement from a quartet from the romantic era or later. The four finalists will play a quartet of their own choice at a public concert in Perth on 27th February 2027. The winners will be awarded a place at Variations 2027, with all tuition and accommodation costs covered, and runners up will be offered free one day workshops with the Edinburgh Quartet.

Deadline for entries: 31 December 2026
