ORA is a professional vocal ensemble made up of some of the leading singers in choral music, founded by Suzi Digby OBE. ORA seeks to captivate audiences with the highest standards of musical excellence combined with a fresh and engaging approach to performance. ORA is not just about singing, though that is at the core of its being, it is also about engaging audiences on many levels with a dramatic and all-encompassing approach to performance that makes true ‘events’ out of concerts. ORA came into being through a belief that we are in a second golden age of choral music, matching that of the Renaissance. The choir’s performances and recordings showcase ‘classic’ masterpieces of Renaissance choral music alongside specially commissioned reflections from prominent and award-winning contemporary composers. Some snaps from our Graduate Composers’ Showcase on Friday 📸 A big thank you to the RWCMD for hosting us again in their stunning Dora Stoutzker Concert Hall - it was great to also work with their composition students in a workshop after the concert 🎶

We’ve got an exciting month ahead with concerts in Cardiff, Twickenham, Wigmore Hall, and Malta - first up is our Graduate Composers’ Showcase this Friday at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama 🎶

Join us at 1:15pm as we premiere five brand new works from some of today’s most exciting emerging composers, Eluned Davies, Harry Rees, Sarah Henderson, Marcello Palazzo and Evie Atkin.

They’ve each written a new ‘reflection’ which takes its inspiration from Renaissance works by John Sheppard, Thomas Tomkins and Peter Philips. We’ll be performing each of these alongside the brand new works in Friday’s concert.

Composer John Barber recently spoke with Ash Khandekar to look back at his commission, ‘Sicut Lilium’ and the story behind it. We originally commissioned John’s piece for our ‘Desires’ album and premiered it at our concert in the Cutty Sark in 2017, so we’re really looking forward to revisiting his stunning piece several years on at our 10th Anniversary Concert on 24th October!

We’re excited to return to the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama for our Graduate Composers’ Showcase on 2nd October!

Join us in the Dora Stoutzker Hall at 13:15 as we premiere 5 exciting new works from composers Marcello Palazzo, Sarah Henderson, Harry Rees, Eluned Davies, and Evie Atkin!

Like many of our other commissions, they’ve each written new ‘reflections’ on Renaissance originals by Sheppard, Tomkins, and Philips, combining their unique sound with the influences of these great Renaissance works. We’ll be performing these pieces alongside each new commission.

Our special 10th Anniversary Concert at Wigmore is coming up on 24th October! To celebrate 10 years, each week we’ll be looking back at some of the highlights from our first decade - starting with our Launch Concerts at the Tower of London, on 9th & 10th February 2016...

This was a hugely special moment for us as we performed repertoire from our first album, ‘Upheld by Stillness’. This programme featured our first set of commissions by Roxanna Panufnik, Roderick Williams, Ēriks Ešenvalds, Francis Pott, Owain Park, Charlotte Bray, and Alexander L’Estrange, alongside their renaissance counterparts from William Byrd’s Five Part Mass.

We had a brilliant time at Kings Place on Friday as we showcased our 10 Young Composers’ brilliant new works!

A huge well done to each of them for writing such imaginative and accomplished works, and a special well done to our Winner, James Cowen, our Runner Up, Immy Sowden, and our Audience Prize winner, Nathaniel Hayes 👏👏👏

A big thank you to our wonderful adjudicators, Giles Swayne, Lucy Walker, and David Norland, for lending their expertise for the occasion - it was wonderful to have them with us!

Just two days to go until our 2026 Young Composers’ Showcase! Come along to Kings Place on Friday at 3pm as we premiere brand new works from 10 of the most exciting young composers from state schools across the UK!

This is the culmination of our flagship education programme which sees 50 students receive free composition coaching with professional composers, with 40 Apprentices fast-tracking their skills with Rory Johnston , and 10 Young Composers getting one-to-one mentoring.

We’ll be performing the Young Composers’ new pieces alongside the Renaissance works they reflect by Robert Parsons and Philippe de Monte, and our audience will be able to vote for the winner of the Audience Prize!

We’ll also be joined by composers Giles Swayne, Lucy Walker, and David Norland who will decide our Winner and Runner Up 🏆

Last week, our Apprentices had their final session where we showcased their brand new pieces that they’ve been working on over the past few weeks!

The Apprentice scheme forms the largest part of our Young Composers’ programme, with 40 students enrolled on an intensive course of online composition workshops with the brilliant Rory Johnston 🎶

Since March, they’ve been coached on elements of composition including harmony, melody, history, writing for voices, texture, and much more. They’ve also had opportunities to meet with industry experts and gain invaluable insight into the world of professional composition.

They applied their skills developed over the last few months to write their brand new pieces, and we’ve loved seeing them grow into more confident and accomplished composers!

A big well done to all of them, and a massive thank you to Rory for his brilliant work inspiring another cohort of Apprentices this year!

Our 10 Young Composers form the other strand of our education work, and you can hear their brand new pieces performed live in concert Kings Place on 31st July, 3pm!
