Nobody really tells you what dentistry feels like AFTER you finally get the degree. Especially when you’re the first person in your family trying to navigate this career on your own.

You spend years working towards “becoming a dentist” thinking everything will suddenly make sense once you qualify... but for a lot of us, that’s when the real uncertainty starts.

Here are a few things we genuinely wish someone told us earlier 👇🏿👇🏿👇🏿

1️⃣ Don’t chase the money!

We know the pressure is real, especially as a first-generation dentist. You often feel responsible for making all the sacrifices “worth it” as quickly as possible. But if money is your only motivation, dentistry can start to feel draining very quickly. Focus first on becoming a confident, skilled and fulfilled clinician. The money comes later, but burnout can come fast.

2️⃣ Decide what kind of dentist YOU want to become

Not everybody wants to specialise, own a practice or do aesthetics - and that’s okay. Success in dentistry looks different for everyone. Build a career that fits YOUR values and lifestyle.

3️⃣ Closed mouths don’t get fed

Ask questions. Apply for opportunities. Reach out or DM people you admire. So many opportunities in dentistry come from simply starting conversations.

4️⃣ Find mentors early

Having mentors changes everything. Find people who inspire you clinically and personally - people you can learn from, ask questions and grow with.

5️⃣ Dentists need to network too

Networking isn’t just for business people. The relationships you build in dentistry can lead to mentorship, opportunities and lifelong friendships. Sometimes one conversation can change your whole career path.

That’s exactly why we are hosting the Specialties in Dentistry Conference - a time to learn, ask questions, meet specialists, connect with potential mentors and realise you don’t have to figure everything out alone 🤍
