This , we’re recognising the vital role carers play, not only in providing everyday support but in improving care by sharing their experiences and perspective.

Behind every patient journey, there are often carers, family members and friends whose insights and voices matter too. At Bowel Research UK, it's important to us that every one of the research projects we fund is designed to improve outcomes for patients, so we include people with experience of a bowel condition, carers, and members of the public at every stage of project development.

Reshma is both a patient and a carer, and she recently took part in a focus group about the use of artificial intelligence in endoscopy. Here's what she had to say about the session:

"We had a good mix of participants, the right amount of time, we were encouraged to express our thoughts and the person leading the meeting was very good. We were asked an important set of questions to improve the study. The study presenters were keen to understand how best to take the study forward."

If you’re a carer, we’d love for you to join our PaRT network and help shape research. Find out more and sign up here: https://bowelresearchuk.org/our-research/patient-and-public-involvement/take-part/

Sue's grandad and dad both died young, aged 45 and 37, following bowel problems. In 1989, after having her own large bowel removed, Sue was told about an inherited condition called familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) and offered genetic testing.

We want to give a massive shoutout to Suzanne, who over the past two years has been increasing her steps and taking on bigger challenges to raise money for Bowel Research UK's vital work! 👏

In September last year, she completed the 25K Chiltern 50 Ultra Challenge. For many, that would be enough, but not for Suzanne! This year, she successfully completed the Brighton Marathon. 🏅💪

So far, Suzanne has raised nearly £2,000 to help improve the lives of those with bowel diseases. She took up running in honour of her daughter, Stephanie, who sadly died suddenly of bowel ischemia in October 2024. Suzanne says training for these fundraisers has helped her with the grief of losing a child.

A huge thank you for your determination, Suzanne, and for all the hours you've spent training!

There's still time to support Suzanne in the Brighton Marathon: https://ow.ly/MM0T50Z7ytb

A study, co-funded by Bowel Research UK, is the first to report on the success of a two-day surgery for patients with the most advanced and complex pelvic cancers.

This major cancer surgery is deliberately carried out over two days, rather than in a single extremely long operation. The main tumour is removed on the first day. Reconstruction and the remaining surgery take place on the second day, after a planned overnight stay.

This study shows that the two-day approach is safe and acceptable to patients.

A massive congratulations to Stella's Stompers for completing the 25K Jurassic Coast Ultra Challenge and raising a fantastic £1,688. This money will support us in funding research that could save lives while also enabling people living with chronic bowel conditions to enjoy a much better quality of life.

Nikki has severe colonic inertia, which means that she has no natural bowel function. Nikki has been on a long and scary journey with endless tests and treatments, and weekends in agony, until she had her stoma surgery last October.

Training with her friends, Tracey and Erin (and of course Stella her stoma), for the Ultra Challenge has helped Nikki get back on her feet and build up her strength again.

Myth or fact? Having diarrhoea for a month or so is nothing to worry about. It's probably just food poisoning. 👇
MYTH!
Chronic diarrhoea (diarrhoea lasting 4 or more weeks) can be a sign of underlying bowel conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome, bowel cancer, inflammatory bowel diseases, or coeliac disease.

We know it can be embarrassing talking to your doctor about bowel problems, but it's important not to ignore persistent symptoms. They could indicate a serious condition.

Did you know that last year Bowel Research UK awarded its first funding round focused on gut microbiome research? 🔬

One year on, Ahsan Javed tells us how his project is progressing. His work will help us understand how the gut microbiome affects the response bowel cancer patients have to treatment and their recovery.

Mr Ahsan Javed is a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon and Senior Lecturer at the of Liverpool.

Professor Julie Cornish says women deserve to be given better information about their health, particularly after childbirth or during perimenopause.

This is why she launched The Everywoman Festival in 2023 - to help women understand their own bodies, what is normal for them, and to know when something isn't right.

Here, she shares eight things she wishes every woman approaching middle age knew.
