Refuweegee

Refuweegee Refuweegee is a local charity with a global mission. To ensure that all refugees arriving in Glasgow are welcomed to the city in true Glaswegian style.

Refuweegee is a community-led charity using your donations to ensure that people who have been forced to flee their homes are welcomed and supported in true weegie style.

It's VOLUNTEER WEEK and we celebrated with many of the amazing people who make Refuweegee what it is.

We absolutely cannot deliver what we do without this amazing community who show up and support. Many of our volunteers are those who have been welcomed and then work hard to become the welcomers 💪

In an average week at Refuweegee we have 180 volunteers spread across our Free Shop, Welcome Space, Guided Support, Playrooms, Conversation Club, Reception, Van Collections & Deliveries, Workshops and Welcome Pack building!

You can see and feel the difference that they make in every single space. Thank you to each and every one of you ❤️

Ever make a really cool poster when you were at school and then realise you'd missed a letter from a word you write almost every day? 👀

Doesn't change the message, in fact it possibly even enhances it!

Welcome to Glagow 🫶

Can you help us keep our welcome packs, free shop and Welcoen Space stocked?

With bus gates and road closures we are seriously struggling to get what we need 📦 🚚🆘️

We are incredibly sad to say goodbye to our wonderful friend and volunteer Jon. We were told last week by Jon's family that he had sadly passed away.

With permission from the family, we wanted to share this news and celebrate our friend as we know how many lives Jon has touched. We will be forever grateful for what Jon contributed to Refuweegee over his years of volunteering.

🚲 On his trusty box bike, Jon delivered hundreds (if not thousands!) of critical support packages and donations. He was part of the Refuweegee family and will be terribly missed by the team of staff, volunteers and visitors. He cheered up the deliveries WhatsApp chat whenever he was out about with photos of where he'd chosen to park up and eat his pieces that day 🥪

We will be attending Jon's funeral and would be happy to pass on any messages to his family from people who wish to share 💌

Help us celebrate a truly wonderful human with stories and kindness in the comments 🤍

Refuweegee is changing up our services!

We want to make sure everyone who visits our space receives the care and dignity they deserve and to do this we need time to run a variety of activities and training sessions throughout our busy week. We’ll be able to better meet the needs of our community (and our team!) by focusing on providing different services each day.

Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays will remain the same as always 🧡

On Wednesdays and Fridays the space will now be dedicated to workshops, events and training.

Working with donations for so many years has allowed us to develop some pretty slick sorting systems, but the thing that our donations sorting volunteers appreciate the most are your labels!

The new donations room can look a little daunting and chaotic at first, but our regular volunteers know it only takes 2 people a few hours to completely reset the space. By roughly categorising each bag and transferring them to their dedicated sorting area, volunteers can efficiently clear the room to make space for future donations.

When facing so many bags containing all the different donations we can accept, that little piece of paper makes a world of a difference!

A label allows us to easily identify priority items and get your donations passed onto the people who need them, so big thank you to all our lovely labellers ✒️🏷️♥️

p.s. These ‘bags of bags’ save the day on Tuesdays and Thursdays when our free shop is busy with customers collecting your donations - if you are planning to drop-off items anyway including a couple spare carrier bags is a huge help! 🫶

A few of you have been asking about dropping off donations this Monday but unfortunately our office closes for bank holidays

We are very aware of how tricky it can be to get into the city centre, which is why we are working hard behind the scenes to come up with alternative donation drop-offs + weekend options for those of you who cannot make it into town during the work week

We promise to update you all as soon as we get things confirmed🤞

For now, donations can still be made directly to our 24 George Square Office from Tuesday 5th

Some of our busier core services like the free shop and hang out space will be on pause next week as our down week schedule is packed with training sessions and time to discuss how we can deliver the best possible experience to both our visitors and donors 🧡

Part of working with volunteers to sort clothing and toy donations is regularly explaining that the bag of tiny clothes and shoes they are trying to take to the baby room is in fact for a specific brand of bear 🧸

When we came across a bag of those distinctly wide shoes and brightly coloured tops we raced upstairs to get the bears in shop dressed!

Our regular toy room volunteer Hafiz kitted each one out before displaying them pride of place of place in front of George Square

All the bears like this one went to new homes the same day, so if you would like to send spare soft/small toys our way please find donation details below!

Donations can be made in person at our 24 George Square office or if coming by car pull into the corner of St Vincent street and phone reception to hand donations over to a volunteer who will meet you there: 0141 401 0756

Monday - Friday • 9:30 - 16:30

We also welcome donations by post to our HQ: 24 George Square, G2 1EQ

p.s. do not worry about the missing sparkly boot it was safe in the pram!
