🌱 Providing formal emotional support is crucial for the well-being of staff members. In addition to informal assistance, it's essential for employees to have access to structured, professional services that offer secure, confidential, and evidence-based emotional support.

Here are some components of formal emotional support:

• Occupational Health and psychological services
• Psychologically informed debriefs after challenging situations
• 1:1 psychology or counseling sessions

It's vital to ensure clear and regular guidance through newsletters, unit noticeboards, and induction materials. Staff members should also be empowered to choose how they recuperate post-incident, whether by taking time off from work, confiding in a colleague, or seeking formal support.

📌 Let's look at real-world instances of Formal Emotional Support:
👤 Unit Name: Nottingham Paediatric Critical Care
Professional Nurse Advocates (PNA)
• PNA service funded 2 days per week post Winter 2022 pressures
• Implemented under NHS England’s well-being strategy using the AEQUIP model
• Offers individual and group restorative clinical supervision, QI support, and career discussions
• Initially funded as a trial using unfillable vacancy budgets
• Impact assessed through activity data and staff input

🌟 Formal emotional support contributes to staff feeling appreciated, supported, and empowered to provide compassionate care.
