Janie Nicoll

Islands is a new body of work by Janie Nicoll, a Glasgow-based visual artist working across painting, collage, printmaking, installation and digital imaging.

Created over the past year, the exhibition explores concepts of human utopias and cultural identity. Additionally, themes relating to climate and sustainability have been a central element of Nicoll's practice, resulting in recent large-scale collage works that incorporate landscape imagery, recycled materials, and the Gaelic language, works which the new relief prints presented here directly relate to. Nicoll's use of relief printmaking as a method of production delights in the traditional method of ‘hands-on’ creating and the gradual construction of multiple reductive layers of colour, culminating in a final photographic layer that finalises the image. The outcomes can be unpredictable and necessitate a certain level of patience, which is again at odds with faster, more contemporary technologies and methods of production.

Rosalind Lawless graduated from Gray’s School of Art and the Royal College of Art, where she was awarded the Tim Mara Award. She has exhibited widely in the UK and internationally, with her work held in collections including the National Galleries of Scotland and the Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh.

Lawless’s architectural printmaking explores bridges, found imagery and recycled materials, transforming recognisable forms through layering, reworking and chance. In this new body of work, inspired by the repeated observation and drawing of a double-arch bridge, water, ink and the physical processes of screenprint combine to create elusive, abstracted forms.

To celebrate the bicentenary of the Royal Scottish Academy, Glasgow Print Studio presents an exhibition of work by four RSA Academicians:

Robbie Bushe | Rachel Maclean
Barry McGlashan | Caroline Walker

Through their distinctive use of narrative, fable, mythology and representation, these four artists create searching and complex interpretations of their subjects. While their worlds of inquiry are diverse, they are united by a striking depth of interpretative, psychological and imaginative impact.

“This exhibition is an exciting opportunity for us to introduce our audience to the work of four remarkable artists and RSA Academicians, each of whom takes an arresting individual path through the intersection of imagery and stories, into realities that may be constructed, staged, unstable or ambiguous.

It is also a celebration of Glasgow Print Studio’s long-standing relationship with the RSA – a vital institution at the heart of Scottish cultural activity – as part of its year-long 200th anniversary celebrations.

Collaboration and dialogue between institutions are foundational to artistic development and public engagement. Bringing artists from other media into contact with printmaking and printmaking audiences opens new points of contact between different approaches, while also considering potential future publication projects with artists whose practices we have long admired.”

Following Between Islands (2024), Branching is the second iteration of exhibitions between the two studios.

Six artists - three from Graphic Studio Gallery and three from Glasgow Print Studio - explore ideas of growth, solitude and connection through the study of trees in urban and wild environments. Through the mediums of etching, screenprint, woodcut, digital, monotype and mixed-media, Branching will highlight collaboration, dialogue, and the living networks that bind artists and ideas together.

The exhibition will subsequently show in Dublin from October 24th.
