🎉 It's game day at the Queen Elizabeth National Spinal Injuries Unit! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿⚽

The day room is ready, the flags are flying, and there's a real buzz around the unit as patients, families and staff come together to cheer on Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 as they take on Morocco 🇲🇦 in the FIFA World Cup! 💙🤍

We're proud to have created a welcoming space where everyone can enjoy the match, share the excitement and be part of the occasion together. Moments like these remind us how sport can lift spirits, spark conversations and bring people together.

Wishing Scotland the very best of luck – we'll be cheering every step of the way!

Congratulations to Mike Thomas on this fantastic and well-deserved MBE. 👏

Everyone at Spinal Injuries Scotland is incredibly proud to have Mike as both a volunteer and member. His dedication to adaptive cycling and helping others enjoy the freedom of the outdoors has inspired so many. Congratulations, Mike – a truly deserved honour! 💙

A huge congratulations to our Chair, Mike Thomas, on being awarded an MBE in the King's Birthday Honours for services to adaptive cycling in Scotland.

This recognition is incredibly well deserved.

Long before ARC existed, Mike was helping people discover the freedom, confidence and joy that adaptive cycling can bring. More than 10 years ago, Mike played a huge part in helping ARC's Founder and CEO, Neil Russell, get started in handcycling. The support, encouragement and knowledge that Mike shared with Neil helped shape a journey that would eventually lead to the creation of ARC, and in turn has helped many more people discover adaptive cycling, build confidence and access the outdoors.

Through his work with the Thistle Foundation at Saughton Park, his commitment to developing adaptive cycling opportunities, and his leadership as Chair of ARC since day one, Mike has dedicated an enormous amount of time to helping others access the outdoors and experience the benefits of cycling.

Those who know Mike will know that he never seeks recognition for what he does. He simply gets on with helping people. That's exactly why this honour feels so fitting.

Mike is also fiercely independent. If you've ever ridden with him, you'll know that offering him a push up a hill is generally met with a look that suggests you've deeply misunderstood the situation! In fact, Mike is usually the one encouraging everyone else to ride back up the hill after coming down it. His love for adaptive cycling, regardless of the conditions, terrain or weather, is infectious, and he has most definitely passed the cycling bug on to many people along the way.

From all of us at ARC, thank you Mike, and congratulations on this fantastic and well-deserved achievement. We're incredibly proud to have you as part of the ARC family.

What an incredible challenge! 💙

This September, Shaun Gash and his team will take on the extraordinary Rollin Round the Komodos Challenge, kayaking over 100km through Indonesia's remote Komodo National Park to raise funds for four charities, including Spinal Injuries Scotland.

Shaun continues to show that a spinal cord injury doesn't have to limit ambition or adventure. We're incredibly grateful for his support and wish him and the whole team the very best as they prepare for this inspiring expedition.

💐 A Well-Deserved Carers Week Thank You! 💙

Following a heartfelt nomination from SIS member 𝗝𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗸, the wonderful team at Stranraer Skills Station were chosen to receive our Carers Week bouquet of flowers.

Jan shared how the team support her every day with compassion, kindness, respect and plenty of laughter, saying, "Without them, my life would be unimaginable."

Yesterday, our Peer Support Advisor Mary Bell had the pleasure of presenting the bouquet to the team, with Jan there to celebrate and personally thank those who make such a positive difference to her life.

A huge congratulations to everyone at Stranraer Skills Station and a heartfelt thank you to all carers who go above and beyond every day. Your care, dedication and kindness truly change lives. 🌷💙

It is with great sadness that we share the news that our dear friend and volunteer, Mary Ballantyne has passed away.

Mary has been a cherished member of our peer support family for many years and was a much loved and valued member of our team.

Her warmth, kindness, generosity, and dedication touched everyone they met. Whether offering a helping hand, a listening ear, or simply a friendly smile, Mary made a lasting difference to so many people.

Mary's presence brought people together, and her commitment to our work and community was an inspiration to us all. She will be deeply missed, but her spirit and the impact she had on our team will never be forgotten.

Our thoughts are with Mary’s family, friends, and all those whose lives were enriched by knowing her. If you would like to leave a comment for the family, please post here and we will share.

🔔 Friendly Reminder – No BSL Taster Session This Thursday 🤟

Just a quick reminder that there will be no British Sign Language (BSL) taster session this Thursday.

Our sessions will return on Thursday 25th June at 1:00pm via Zoom, and we can't wait to welcome you back!

These friendly, relaxed sessions with Mary Bell, Peer Support Advisor, are a great way to begin learning BSL, build confidence, and connect with others in our community.

Whether you've joined us before or are completely new to BSL, everyone is welcome.
