Picture of the day shows Fishwives Choir Outside Binn’s Department Store c.1955

Johnstone (“Dotty”) McPhail (front row, fourth right).

“Dotty” was one of the “Five Singing Sisters”. She married William Brown and was the father of John Murray Brown. The photograph was possibly taken before a choir trip to London.

- Enjoyed memories of Sandra and of a vanished Edinburgh
- By photographing those around her, enabled us to see a picture that might be forgotten
- Such a rich and beautiful documentation of diverse community, care, and the power of the lens to translate and artists intentions
- The photographs document both individualism and community which is really beautiful
- Wonderful to see an extensive show of Sandra’s work in Edinburgh – building on the Glasgow International exhibition
