Outer Spaces supports the creative and professional development of artists through studio and project spaces, awards, commissioning and partnerships. We invest in the creative energy of Scotland. We create temporary art spaces in major towns and cities and subsidise the research and production costs of artists in our network with free studio space. We are thrilled to introduce , our third Scotland + Venice Senior Exhibition Associate for the 60th International Art Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia! 🦁✨

Based in Edinburgh, Jj’s work spans poetry, writing, film, soundscapes, and performance art, exploring themes of feminist theory, Black Afrofuturism, and world-building.

Jj has been part of our network for over a year, starting with the Outer Spaces Cube Studio Programme, which included tours as part of Edinburgh Art Festival ( ) and most recently presented their first show at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe as part of the Made in Scotland Showcase 2026 ( ).

Having supplied the studio space for Jj to grow their practice here in Scotland, Outer Spaces is now providing the support to expand their research whilst in Venice.

Over their 10-week residency in Venice, Jj will be exploring concepts of ‘masking’— weaving together street interviews, local confessional stories, and Venetian mask traditions with Nigerian mask culture, alongside investigating performative social spaces like club culture.

Artist Calum Rennie (Calum Rennie ) shares an elegant reflection as their time in Venice as our second Scotland + Venice Senior Exhibition Associate concludes.

Captured in the small gaps between work, visitors, and events, Calum reflects on transition, distance, community, and navigating the Biennale:

“There is such a thing as Venice-time. Or perhaps more precisely, biennale-time. As the vaporetti that circulate the canals and wider lagoon, time tethers with fraying rope only at points of arrival and departure.” ✨

🫟 New free space for creatives in Aberdeen!

Located in the former Debenhams unit at the Trinity Centre, this potential art space spans three floors with both open-plan and self-contained areas to suit a variety of creative practices.
Features Include:
- Access 9am – 6pm (Mon–Sat) & 9am – 5:30pm (Sun)
- Open-plan and self-contained spaces
- Lighting and electricity included
- On-site parking available at Trinity Centre for £4.50/day

We are now seeking expressions of interest from artists, creative groups, and organisations interested in temporary space in a central Aberdeen property.

📣 As we prepare to make another space available for creatives to use for free, we are seeking expressions of interest from artists, creative groups and organisations interested in a temporary space in an exciting new property near Glasgow Airport.

This potential new art space in Renfrewshire is large and expansive and would suit a variety of arts practices and uses including studio space, rehearsal space and art storage. The property offers:
• Access between 6am and midnight.
• Generous parking space
• Regular busses between Clydebank and Paisley
• Former offices which could support approx.150 artists. This includes both open plan and self-contained spaces
• One very large warehouse which could support artists and creative organisations with storage, fabrication of large works, or rehearsal space
• Canteen and kitchen space
• Lighting and electricity
• Good natural light (with some fantastic views) and windows that open.
• Toilets on all floors
(Unfortunately, the building is not heated and does not offer step-free access).

Our Spaces Manager, Imogen Lee Allen (.allen.art), has been in Venice for the 2026 Biennale!

While there, Imogen caught up with Calum Rennie (), currently on-site as one of our Senior Exhibition Associates. They reflected on their experience of connecting with other peers and exploring dynamic creative spaces across the city.

Imogen explored the Giardini and Arsenale as part of the Biennale’s official programme, alongside a number of Collateral events across the city, including the wonderful Scotland + Venice Pavilion. See some of her favourites in her notebook slides 📖

As an organisation dedicated to nurturing artistic ecosystems, Outer Spaces believes in extending professional development opportunities across our whole community, including our team. We view professional development as essential for both career growth and creative practices. Our staff team have been through art school and are practicing artists themselves, and we actively support opportunities to develop both.

Venice Bound, Immersion & Temporary Spaces ✈️🇮🇹

At Outer Spaces, supporting professional development isn't just for our network artists, it extends across our whole team. Alongside our Senior Exhibition Associates professional development programme, some of our staff will be visiting the Venice Biennale 2026!

This week, our Space Manager Imogen Lee Allen heads to Venice. This is a chance to connect with international peers and arts workers, and catch up with the Scotland + Venice pavilion! She will also be able to gather reflections on temporary space use across the Biennale. Imogen said:

'Visiting the Venice Biennale is an incredible opportunity to experience a complete immersion in art and creativity. Having worked across Scotland supporting our network of artists inhabiting temporary studio space, I'm looking forward to exploring the Biennale's collateral events, which take place in buildings across the whole city. This feels like a fascinating parallel to the work Outer Spaces does across Scotland. As a practising artist myself, I can't wait to have my own creative ideas sparked.'

💡Join the Outer Spaces team!

We're looking for an adaptable and resourceful new team member based in Aberdeen.

The post holder will be coordinating the management of existing spaces and the set up and occupation of new spaces in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Inverness, Perth, Stirling and Dundee. They will support artists and emerging networks in temporary spaces in Aberdeen and the surrounding areas as well as in major cities and towns across Scotland.
