We're looking for an adaptable and resourceful new team member based in Aberdeen.

The post holder will be coordinating the management of existing spaces and the set up and occupation of new spaces in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Inverness, Perth, Stirling and Dundee. They will support artists and emerging networks in temporary spaces in Aberdeen and the surrounding areas as well as in major cities and towns across Scotland.

🗞️ Update .scotland Fountainbridge Studio Pilot Residency insight from Aoife Cawley!

“This residency has allowed me to treat my practice with the focus it deserves and establish a healthier work-life balance. I realise now how much I truly need a dedicated space. Having this studio helps me structure my projects alongside my work with and , while the support of the commission eases financial pressure.

Beyond giving me the room for ongoing work, it came at the perfect time to explore new ideas. I’ve been reflecting on my recent RSA trip to Florence, as well as how the late 19th-century Irish Arts and Crafts movement responded to industrialisation, which has me curious about what today’s artistic response may be to the emergence of AI.”

is a printmaker and textiles artist from county Kildare, now working between Ireland and Scotland. Graduating in 2024 in Contemporary Art Practice from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design , her work explores history, mythology, folklore, and the lives of saints, blending traditional medieval art forms with contemporary techniques. ⚗️

Her vibrant, multi-layered screen prints and embroidered textiles have been exhibited widely in Ireland and the UK, and she has been featured in media outlets such as The Irish Times, RTÉ, and Tourism Ireland. You may have seen their recent YPC Scotland World Cup Football Scarf project commissioned by the 🦄 and her work on display in the 🏰

Catching-up with our pilot residency artists at Outer Spaces Fountainbridge, Edinburgh, we are delighted to highlight how they used their time. Each resident was supported with a studio space and bursary, creating room to make new work, explore process, and experiment without fixed outcomes.

Crystal Bennes is an Edinburgh-based artist and writer whose research-led practice centres feminist critique, material ecologies, and the hidden infrastructures of science and technology.

“The residency came at a perfect time as I needed space to just be in the studio and play. I spent all of last year working on a film and the residency gave me the opportunity to return to physical stuff and to feel my way through the research with material experimentation.”

“During the residency, I developed new works for a long-term project on paper as a key technology of the British empire. I'm looking at this history through stories of British military imperialism in China, the so-called O***m Wars, as well as the neglected history of the Chinese Labour Corps, 100,000 workers brought from China to the fronts of WW1. I'm also looking at connected histories of opioid crises and exploring the materiality of paper, which was first created in China.

From the Studio to the Biennale 🏛️✨

We are thrilled to introduce Calum Rennie ( ), the second of four artists participating in our professional development programme at the 61st Venice Biennale.

Based in our Ocean Point studios in Leith, Edinburgh, Calum’s practice operates between fine art and design, using print, text and photography to explore expanded notions of place and q***r interrelations between environments, bodies, and materials.

As a Senior Exhibition Associate for , Calum will spend 10 weeks in Venice, supporting the public’s engagement with the Shame Parade exhibition by , curated by .

Beyond their role as a Senior Exhibition Associate, Calum will develop research through visits to the island of San Michele to continue their thinking on cemeteries as sites of language, material and ecologies; where q***r memory might lie dormant, remain veiled, or act to disrupt.

Calum said: “I’m looking forward to understanding what the Biennale means as this strange anomalous place, hovering between a constant festival versus what it means to actually live and work there, especially with the parallels to Edinburgh as a festival city.”
