With support from the European Union, one father in Gaza received cash assistance through the Basic Needs Consortium (BNC), implemented by Catholic Relief Services and Mercy Corps.

It came just days before his wife gave birth, helping him pay for transport to the hospital and buy baby formula, at a time when many mothers are unable to breastfeed due to lack of nutritious food.

Because dignity starts with meeting basic needs, cash assistance ensures families can choose what matters most.

Vulnerable families in Gaza are facing new evacuation orders and expanded fighting, without sufficient access to humanitarian aid.
The Basic Needs Consortium — Mercy Corps, Danish Refugee Council, Catholic Relief Services, and six Palestinian NGOs — was launched in April 2025 to help families across Gaza and the West Bank meet their basic needs.

Thanks to EU support, 70,000 people in 37 displacement sites have already benefited.

Much more is needed. The Consortium is working hard to further scale up its impact and reach more families in need. EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid

The first officially confirmed famine in the Middle East is happening now in Gaza. A new UN-backed report says more than 500,000 people in Gaza face catastrophic hunger, including 130,000 children under five who are at risk of death from acute malnutrition.

"What we are witnessing in Gaza is a moral failing of the highest order. The world knows how to stop a famine, we just need the will to act." - Tjada D'Oyen McKenna, Mercy Corps CEO.

Mercy Corps has life-saving aid for more than 160,000 people waiting for permission to enter Gaza. But it has been blocked for months. What's missing isn't the capacity to respond, but the political will to allow it.

Without a ceasefire and unhindered humanitarian access, the suffering will only deepen. Gazans are losing hope – and time is running out for survival. The question isn't whether we can save lives, it's whether we will.

This World Humanitarian Day comes at a moment of unprecedented need and unprecedented risk.

More than 265 aid workers have lost their lives this year alone, following 2024's record-breaking toll.

And yet, every day, humanitarians keep going - into conflict zones, disaster areas, and places most of us will never see - to help people survive another day.

Our 4,000 team members worldwide work tirelessly to ensure communities are healthy, safe, and thriving.

Today, we invite you to send a message of support to these extraordinary individuals who have devoted their lives to helping others.

Your words of gratitude matter more than you know.

In Aden, Yemen, climate-smart innovations are transforming local livelihoods.

Funded by UK International Development, the Fresh Horizons project has helped local entrepreneurs embrace climate-smart tools to strengthen their businesses and communities.

Khaled and Muhammad, mobile fish traders, now use solar-powered tuk-tuks to keep their fish fresh and reduce spoilage on the go. Woud, a mother and entrepreneur, has scaled up her home-based tuna business with the help of a solar-powered fridge, cutting waste and reaching more customers.

These stories highlight how locally led, climate-resilient solutions can create economic opportunities, even in fragile contexts.

Surging violence in Gazza has triggered yet another wave of mass displacement, with over 737,000 people fleeing temporary shelters in Gaza City alone. Humanitarian assistance is nearly impossible to deliver at the scale needed, as border crossings remain closed and access to the few supplies that do arrive is fraught with danger—resulting in thousands of injuries and deaths near aid distribution sites. Basic services are collapsing under the weight of a critical fuel shortage.

In the face of this ongoing catastrophe, our staff in Gaza continue to serve with courage and humanity.
