Mamie Martin Fund

Mamie Martin Fund Educating Girls. Empowering Malawi. We support girls' education in North Malawi and have been doing so since 1993, working with local partners.

Mamie Martin, the wife of a Scottish missionary, lived and died in Malawi in the 1920s. A teacher in Scotland, she was passionate about educating the girls of Malawi who, at that time, were not given the chance to go to school. Returning to Malawi in the early 1990s, Mamie's daughter discovered that the situation had not changed all that much and founded the Mamie Martin Fund in her mother's memor

y. Many Malawian girls are unable to attend secondary school due to financial constraints. The Mamie Martin Fund was set up to ensure that no girl who has gained a place at secondary school should have to give it up because of poverty, and provides grants to fund the school expenses of girls in need. There are payments needed to the school and the girls also need many personal items and schoolwork items. We work with our partners, the CCAP (Livingstonia), the Diocese of Karonga and Mchengautuba CDSS in Mzuzu.

Thanks, One World Shop, for inviting Mercy to speak at this lovely event. Thanks, too, for the ongoing support of our essential Ready to Learn Fund which enables girls to stay in school by providing essentials like soap, notebooks, pens and sanitary wear, sourced from Supreme Re-usable Sanitary Pads in Nkhata Bay. Supporting local businesses there!

Last night, we had the incredible opportunity to host a Meet and Greet with Mercy Sibande, the country director of the Mamie Martin Fund. The Mamie Martin Fund supports secondary education of girls in North Malawi. The Mamie Martin Fund currently supports 163 girls across seven schools, including 19 girls at a school for deaf children in Embangweni. Through our Magic Beans Loyalty Program, customers receive 1p of credit for every £1 spent towards the Mamie Martin Fund. Through this initiative, customers can support these girls in Malawi by donating their loyalty points towards personal care necessities for these girls. With the help of the Magic Beans Loyalty Program, One World Shop was able to donate £300 towards the Mamie Martin Fund thanks to our customers.
