🚨 One of the ocean’s fastest predators was never meant to live in a cage.
A new report from Compassion in World Farming exposes the dark reality behind the rapid boom of Atlantic bluefin tuna farming - and why this “luxury” industry is an environmental and animal welfare disaster.
Between 2003 and 2024, the number of farmed tuna skyrocketed 19-fold, with up to one million fish now confined annually in sea cages.
Just as Atlantic bluefin tuna populations are beginning to recover from near-extinction, dragging wild tuna into cages during their crucial reproductive season threatens to trigger severe overfishing all over again.
The tuna REALLY suffer. In the wild, Atlantic bluefin tuna swim up to 260 km per day and must swim continuously just to breathe. Trapped in crowded farm cages, these ocean giants suffer extreme distress, leading to skin erosion, severe fin injuries and even eye loss.
And did you know that the confined tuna are fed other fish? It takes up to 3,000 kg of wild fish just to produce 200 kg of farmed tuna. This wasteful system robs lower-trophic wild fish from marine ecosystems and deprives vulnerable coastal communities in North and Sub-Saharan Africa of vital food sources.
It’s time to stop expanding ocean factory farms and leave tuna in the wild. Choose vegan instead.
